The
first Veterans final of the day was the Wooden
Spoon Final as the two teams would battle it
out for the coveted prize of literally a wooden
spoon!
Often
the Wooden Spoon Final's provide some of the
most entertaining games of our tournaments and
this one didn't disappoint. Often it's the carefree
attitude of the teams and often the timing of
the Final means there are plenty of spectator's
cheering the teams on from the sideline creating
a cracking atmosphere.
The
two teams on show were FC Dads Club and Peebles
All Stars. FC Dads Club were looking for their
first win in our Veterans tournaments and they
were getting closer. In Lisbon 2017 they didn't
register a point but last year in Mallorca they
took 2 draws from 4 games and both defeats were
by the odd goal. Today they had 2 draws from
their 5 games. This would be an ideal time to
chalk up their first win.
Peebles
All Stars had statistically a better record
over the last couple of years than their opponents
with 3 wins and 6 draws over the same period
(2017-9). They also had the biggest win of the
2017 Lisbon Veterans (7-1) under their belts
and arguably scored the best goal ever in one
of our Veterans tournament (overhead kick in
group B today). Peebles Nae Stars had picked
up a 1-0 win over their opponents earlier in
the day.
The
first half in this game was relatively serene
with the game locked at 0-0. In the second half
the goals flowed. Sadly for FC Dads Club the
goals all went against them. Scott Hutcheson
opened the scoring before Mike Reid doubled
the advantage. James Sherwood completed the
scoring for a fine 3-0 win for the Scottish
team.
Peebles
All Stars were our Wooden Spoon winners today
– congratulations to them. The debate rages
whether the Wooden Spoon should be collected
by the team that wins the match or the team
that loses it. As winners, Peebles All Stars
had the honour of choosing and they nominated
their opponents to collect the prize!
