As the 2019 Budapest Fives Quarter-Finals were about to get underway we were down to the elite 8 teams in the tournament with the England (x2), Hungary (x5) and France (x1) all represented. We had a very strong line-up.

We started on Pitch A with two teams who knew how to win in our tournaments. Meglepetes were our champions here in Budapest in 2016 whilst Skidmarks had two trophies in their cabinet (Valencia Fives, Krakow Trophy).

Meglepetes had a strong record in the Quarter-Final stage of our tournaments and were unbeaten in normal time in these games. Just one penalty shoot out defeat prevented them having a 100% record.

2013 Plate: 2-1 win versus Budapest Celtic Tigers

2014 Plate: 5-2 win versus LITS

2015 Cup: 4-1 win versus Argentina

2017 Cup: 2-2 draw versus Paralytic Athletic (lost 2-1 penalties)

These two teams had met in Group A earlier in the day, in fact in the last game of the group. Meglepetes had won that game 1-0 and so would no doubt start favourites with 16 points from a possible 18 but there looked to be little to choose between the teams on the field of play.

It was Skidmarks who hit the front in this game with Ash Britten scoring in the first half. Meglepetes struck back in the second period to secure a 1-1 draw and send this game into a penalty shoot-out. Skidmarks could well be favourites for this as Meglepetes had been involved in 3 previous penalty shoot-outs in our tournaments and lost them all!

3 defeats out of 3 became 4 defeats out of 4 as Skidmarks won the shoot-out 3-2. They now had a superb 75% win ratio on penalties with 6 wins out of 8.

So, who would meet Skidmarks in the Semi-Final? Would it be Mamarre FC or Budasesh?

Mamarre FC had enjoyed a very solid start to the day. They won Group B with 5 wins, 1 draw and 0 defeats. They scored 9 goals and kept 5 clean sheets – the joint best defence in the tournament so far. They looked like one of the favourites for the title.

Budasesh had enjoyed a tournament of two halves so far. The first half was exemplary with 3 wins out of 3. They picked up 1-0, 5-0 and 1-0 wins and looked excellent. However, the second half of the group phase had not been so kind. Three successive 2-1 defeats had seen them slip to third in the table but still qualify for the Cup. Could they return to winning ways?

The gap between the group and the knockout phase seemed to have done Budasesh some good as they matched their opponents stride for stride. There was nothing to separate the teams in the first half. In the second half there was still nothing to divide them. Penalties would be required.

As in the first Quarter-Final it would be an English team victorious on spot-kicks and a Hungarian team defeated. Imagine that? English teams winning on penalties! Budasesh were victorious 2-0 in the shoot-out and marched on.

Quarter-Final three was Budapest Vikings versus JUBI Titans. Budapest Vikings emerged from the group phase as Group C champions. They recorded 15 points (5 wins, 1 loss) with 14 goals scored and just 4 conceded. That only defeat came in the final game when Cup qualification was already wrapped up. This promised to be a really close match as JUBI Titans scored 14 points but finished second in Group B. They had scored 10 goals for the concession of just 1 as they went unbeaten with 4 wins and 2 draws.

We expected this to be the closest of the Quarter-Finals but we were wrong. The first two semi-finals had gone to pens but this game was completely one-sided.

It was JUBI Titans who took the lead thanks to Krisztian Jenei. It was a vital early goal but it got even better for JUBI Titans when Barnabas Kantos made it 2-0. Krisztian Jenei increased the lead to 3-0 and it was only half-time.

After the break the trend continued with Barnabas Kantor the chief tormentor. He bagged a hat-trick in the second half to take his match tally to four. Krisztian Jenei then completed his hat-trick as JUBI Titans completed a thumping 7-0 win. It equaled the record for the largest Cup Quarter-Final win at the Budapest Fives last achieved at the 2012 edition of the tournament when Romania's ABC United defeated Exeter Gently by the same score.

The final Quarter-Final was Expats FC Paris versus Budapest Celtic Tigers. Expats FC Paris had qualified as 2nd placed in Group A and were the sole French representatives of the triumvirate of teams from Paris who started the day. Budapest Celtic were the defending champions and looking to become the first team in Budapest Fives history to retain the title.

In fact in the history of eurofootballfives.com (over 100 tournaments) only once had a team successfully retained a title. That was Athletico Do Hollande who won the Algarve Open in 2010 and 2011. Could history beckon for Budapest Celtic?

It looked good for the local team as they took a 1-0 lead thanks to Sergio Navarro's second goal of the day. Celtic were pegged back by Julien Guillot's goal and it was 1-1 at half-time.

In the second half it was Expats FC Paris who hit the front and it was Julien Guillot again. The next goal would be crucial. It was Aleks Kostov of Expats FC Paris who scored it to open up a two goal cushion. Mike Walne made it 4-1 and it was game over for the Budapest Celtic defence.

Congratulations to Expats FC Paris on a fine win.
