Expats FC Paris (Fra)

After 79 games of football we came down to the most important of them all. Game 80 – The 2019 Budapest Fives Cup Final. The two teams set to do battle for the honour and glory of victory were Skidmarks (Eng) versus Expats Paris FC (Fra).

Since 2015 this tournament has been dominated by Hungarian teams with Csabagyongye, Meglepetes and Budapest Celtic all successful. You had to go back to 2013 for the last English winner of this tournament. A French team had never won the Budapest Fives….not yet anway.

Skidmarks were bidding to win their third eurofootballfives.com title. They already possessed the 2011 Valencia Fives & 2012 Krakow Trophy. They came close at the 2013 Mallorca Fives, 2014 Bratislava Fives and 2018 Amsterdam Fives when they finished runners-up.

For Expats FC Paris, they could become the third team from France to lift a eurofootballfives.com title. The record of teams from France in Cup Finals read:

Wins

2009 Barca Fives: Luminy Wolves bt Goldsmith Williams 3-2 on pens after 0-0 draw.

2013 Mallorca Fives: Grant Thornton bt Skidmarks 2-0

2016 Riga Tournament: L'Albiceleste won 2-1 on penalties after 2-2 draw with Leilupe.

2017 Barcelona Fives: L'Albiceleste bt Naranjitos 2-1

R/up

2012 Algarve Open: CFC A lost 6-1 to ManDem United

2013 Algarve Open: CFC lost 1-0 to FC Radbroke

2013 Berlin Fives: Luminy Wolves lost 5-1 to ABC United

2013 Krakow Trophy: The A Team lost 2-1 to Budapest Celtic

2015 Bratislava Fives: The A Team lost 1-0 to GSF Drunkerz

2016 Lisbon Tournament: World Pinteur lost 2-0 on penalties after 2-2 draw with Parques Tejo.

2019 Amsterdam Fives: The A Team lost 4-1 to Epsilon Rovers.

You may have noticed that 2013 Mallorca Fives entry where Skidmarks were on the wrong end of a French Cup win. Hopefully for Skidmarks lightning would not strike twice, hopefully for Expats FC Paris it would.

The two teams had met earlier in the day in Round 1 of Group A. The teams had drawn 1-1 on that occasion and we anticipated another close contest here in the Cup Final.

It did not start well for Expats FC Paris as Skidmarks struck early. Ricki Keeley scoring the opening goal as he did in the Semi-Final. It was maybe an omen for Skidmarks but in their previous 5 finals, the two games in which they scored the opening goal they went on to win. That looked an increasing possibility here when Ash Britten scored his fourth of the tournament. Ricki Keeley then bagged his second of the game and fifth of the day to make it 3-0 at half-time. Skidmarks had one hand on the coveted trophy.

The Cup Final was briefly held up by a Slovakian pitch invasion/streak (best not to ask!) but normal service was resumed in the second half. Neil Taylor rounded off a 4-0 win in the Semi-Final and there was symmetry as he repeated the dose in the Cup Final. Skidmarks began their eurofootballfives.com career with a 4-0 win in a Cup Final versus Los Casa (Spa). They rounded off their 10 th tournament with a 4-0 Cup Final win.

We offer our consolations to Expats FC Paris who were superb on the day and a top quality side. They had knocked out two excellent teams in the QF and SF but ultimate success was not to be theirs today.

Our congratulations for the personal honours go to Dani Harasztos of Budapest Celtic Lions with 8 goals.

We offer massive congratulations to Skidmarks who finished the day with 2 trophies. One a commemorative trophy for their 10 th eurofootballfives.com tour and more importantly the 2019 Budapest Fives title. Their third title which puts them joint third on the all-time winners list. An excellent day's work!

Thank you to all the teams who competed. We hope to see you all again at a tournament very soon.
