The eurofootballfives Veterans Tournament is a moveable feast. The story began in Lisbon in 2013 before going on the road to Mallorca (2014 & 2017), the Algarve (2015 & 2018) with a return to Lisbon in 2016 and a brand new destination for 2019, Alicante. Due to growing popularity we added a second Veterans tournament to our calendar to be staged in September. Lisbon again kicked us off in 2017 with Mallorca in 2018 and now our first Veterans visit to Budapest.

Previous winners:

2013 Lisbon: Sao Marcos (Por)

2014 Mallorca: Palmesanos (Spa)

2015 Algarve: Mini FC (Por)

2016 Lisbon: Sago (Por)

2017 Mallorca: FC Mahou (Eng)

2017 Lisbon: Talhos Mariete (Por)

2018 Algarve: Mini FC (Por)

2018 Mallorca: Policia Local (Spa)

2019 Alicante: Esparta (Spa)

2019 Budapest: To be confirmed!

First up in Group A was World Pinteur Veterans (Fra) versus Bure Park Old Boys (Eng). It was the French team who kicked off in style and in particular Eric Lemoisson who scored two first half goals for his team.

After the break, Ian Mansley reduced the deficit to 2-1 but World Pinteur Veterans would re-establish a two goal lead thanks to Romain Ziat. Final score, 3-1.

The next two teams up on Pitch D were Legends of the Vale and Peebles Nae Stars. The two teams had a similar history in our tournaments. Both teams started out with an appearance in our Barcelona Fives Open Age tournament. Then, both teams made their Veterans debut with us at last year's event in Mallorca.

These two teams got to know each other quite well at the 2018 Mallorca Tournament as they played twice. The teams proved well matched as they played out a 0-0 draw on both occasions.

Thankfully we would have goals to celebrate in Budapest. The 3-game duck was broken by Steve Gillham who gave the Scottish team the lead. Legends of the Vale staged a second half comeback as Ali Fener produced an equalising goal. It would not be a third successive draw though as Steve Hesketh struck a winner for Legends of the Vale.

The first phase of the 2019 Budapest Veterans Tournament would be decided on a group basis. There was two groups each with 6 teams.

Each team would play each other team in their group once and therefore 5 group games. After which, depending on position, they would progress to the Cup or Plate competition.

The teams finishing 1st to 4th in each group would progress to the Cup competition. This will be played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.

The teams finishing 5th to 6th in each group would progress to the Plate competition. This would be played as a knock-out phase with Semi-Finals and Final.

Group A continued with Budapest Celtic Heroes hosting FC Dads Club (the new name for The Special Ones). This game proved to be a tighter than a camels ar5e in a sandstorm as there was nothing to separate the two teams.

The match ended 0-0 with each team claiming a point.
