At
this stage of the tournament Peebles All Stars
and Peebles Nae Stars were struggling to put out
two full line-ups due to injuries. Having checked
with all the teams in the Veterans tournament,
special dispensation was given for them to merge
the two squads so they could fulfill their fixtures
in both Groups A and Groups B. We thank everyone
for their co-operation with this.
Bure
Park Seniors would now face Peebles All Stars
in game 11 of Group B. Bure Park Seniors had just
pulled off their first win of the day and a strong
end to the group could see them qualify for the
Cup as they had done last year.
Bure
Park Seniors had shot themselves in the foot in
the last game with an own goal. They were to do
the same here as they afforded Peebles All Stars
a 1-0 lead. That was the only goal in the first
half. Bure Park came from behind to turn it around
as they had done in their previous game. Richard
Holliday and Simon Dearing both scoring for the
second game running. Had they bagged themselves
another 3 points? They would have done if it wasn't
for a moment of sheer brilliance.
With
time running out it looked like Peebles were to
lose again despite having their chances. Mike
Reid took a throw-in that floated into the penalty
area. His brother, Matt Reid, launched himself
and hung in the air just long enough to make a
perfect connection with an overhead kick as the
ball flew into the net. It was a stunning goal
and as captain Scott Hutcheson said, “was arguably
the greatest goal that almost nobody ever saw.
Ronaldo, Messi or Puskas (nice touch for Budapest!)
could have done no better”.
What
an equalizer, what a way to finish a game. Final
score, 2-2.
