Hungarian Journalists NT had just suffered their first defeat of the day to Elcombe Old Boys. It meant they were now 3 points adrift of the top two teams (Elcombe Old Boys, Budapest Celtic Legends). They were now up against Budapest Celtic Legends and had a chance to join the leaders at the summit of Group B.

This was a big game for the journalists against their rivals. Budapest Celtic Legends had been steady today – 4 goals, 2 wins, 1 draw and Ardalan Hamidi in goal for the Legends was yet to concede. However, that was all about to change.

Hungarian Journalists NT put in a big performance and claimed all 3 points. Not only that but they won it in style. At half-time they had their noses in front thanks to a goal from Bartalan Bicskei.

In the second half they pulled away from their opponents as Peter Nagy and Janos Dudas added to the score for a sensational 3-0 win. The league leaders were comprehensively beaten.

At this stage of the tournament Peebles All Stars and Peebles Nae Stars were struggling to put out two full line-ups due to injuries. Having checked with all the teams in the Veterans tournament, special dispensation was given for them to merge the two squads so they could fulfill their fixtures in both Groups A and Groups B. We thank everyone for their co-operation with this.

Bure Park Seniors would now face Peebles All Stars in game 11 of Group B. Bure Park Seniors had just pulled off their first win of the day and a strong end to the group could see them qualify for the Cup as they had done last year.

Bure Park Seniors had shot themselves in the foot in the last game with an own goal. They were to do the same here as they afforded Peebles All Stars a 1-0 lead. That was the only goal in the first half. Bure Park came from behind to turn it around as they had done in their previous game. Richard Holliday and Simon Dearing both scoring for the second game running. Had they bagged themselves another 3 points? They would have done if it wasn't for a moment of sheer brilliance.

With time running out it looked like Peebles were to lose again despite having their chances. Mike Reid took a throw-in that floated into the penalty area. His brother, Matt Reid, launched himself and hung in the air just long enough to make a perfect connection with an overhead kick as the ball flew into the net. It was a stunning goal and as captain Scott Hutcheson said, “was arguably the greatest goal that almost nobody ever saw. Ronaldo, Messi or Puskas (nice touch for Budapest!) could have done no better”.

What an equalizer, what a way to finish a game. Final score, 2-2.

Up next on Pitch D was Old York Cosmos versus Elcombe Old Boys. Elcombe Old Boys were one of three teams tied on 7 points at the top but they had a game in hand – this was it. Old York Cosmos could have been just the one point behind but they must have been ruing letting a two goal lead slip in their previous game. They were currently in fourth but could go third with a win.

Elcombe Old Boys were enjoying themselves at Veterans level. They were unbeaten so far and were yet to concede. They still had a little way to emulate their record unbeaten run which was 12 games that ran from their last group game in 2014 Barcelona Fives all the way through to their third group game in the 2016 Barcelona Fives. They also had a run of 8 games unbeaten from their fourth group game at that 2016 tournament until the first game of their 2017 Barcelona Fives campaign. Their unbeaten record currently stood at 3 but that was soon to change to 4.

Old York Cosmos were competitive in this one but they were unable to prevent Marcus Faure giving Elcombe Old Boys a 1-0 lead in the first half. Elcombe Old Boys were yet to concede in the tournament so goals almost certainly meant victory for Elcombe. They were top with a 3 point lead.
