Round
3 started with Fail Madrid versus Budasesh.
In 2018, Fail Madrid made their fourth appearance
in our events in Gdansk. They had a tough start
to the group with defeats to FC Maroon (who
had won their Group on their previous appearance)
and Lilchicago (who were runners-up at the 2017
Vilnius Tournament). Another defeat followed
to RAF Fylingdales before their form turned
around. They finished the group with two wins
against The Crazy Gang and Bede FC as they finished
fourth to qualify for the Plate. In the Quarter-Finals
they suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to FC Shark.
So
far today these teams had played 3 games (Fail
Madrid x1, Budasesh x2) and between them these
teams had walked off the pitch with a win on
each occasion. Something would have to give
here.
It
was Budasesh who continued their sensational
start to the tournament. They were made to work
for it though as they won by just the one goal.
The goal was scored by Dan Quirk who scored
twice in the previous round. Defensively they
were also sound as they kept a third successive
clean sheet.
Game
8 of Group C was Argon'ze versus John Lewis FC.
Both teams had experienced a slow start to the
competition. Argon'ze had played two, lost two.
John Lewis FC had played one, lost one. Both teams
were looking for their first goals of the tournament
but it was still early days.
After
the early exchanges of the match the teams remained
locked together at 0-0. Whilst obviously better
than a defeat, a draw would not be overly useful
to either team. Could one of these teams push
on and bag a winner?
The
short answer to that was yes but were the points
heading to France or England? It was a case of
“Allez Les Bleus” as Hugo Leroy scored the all
important goal. Argon'ze were up and running.
The
next game was The Crazy Gang versus Budapest Vikings.
On paper this looked like a formality for the
away team on the fixture list. The Crazy Gang
had played two, lost two, scored zero, conceded
six and were bottom of the table. Budapest Vikings
were the polar opposite – played two, won two,
scored six, conceded zero and were top of the
table.
Budapest
Vikings had been consistent so far with two successive
3-0 wins on the bounce. That was soon to become
three successive 3-0 wins as they joined Budasesh
at the top of the Group C table. The Vikings lead
the way on goal difference.
To
be fair to The Crazy Gang they were very much
in the game for large chunks of the game. Thomas
was scorer of the first goal for the Vikings and
it took a little while for the second goal to
come and make the game safe. Eirik Lea was the
scorer of the second goal. Thomas followed that
in with the third and final goal of the game.
