Welcome to Budapest for the eighth edition of the Budapest Fives football tournament in Hungary for our 110th tournament in Europe. With 21-teams assembled in the Open Age category and 12-teams assembled in the Veterans section were ready to kick-off our largest single tournament weekend to date.

Our debut in May 2011 saw Olympic Phil Babb claim the honours by winning their 4th European title in 4 attempts. In 2012 they vacated their crown to chase glory in Mallorca as Romanian side, ABC United, stormed to victory. The Romanians in turn vacated their title to successfully chase glory in the 2013 Berlin Fives as Team Bear stepped up to take the title.

The 2014 Budapest Fives saw CIS Committee of Belarus claim the first of their 2 eurofootballfives.com titles that year (they also won the Bratislava Fives). 12 months on in May 2015, CIS Committee were back to retain their title and they made it all the way to the Cup Final but fell at the last hurdle as Csabagyongye made their breakthrough Cup victory to become 2015 champions.

It was Hungarian success again in 2016 as Meglepetes became the sixth individual winner of the title and made it back-to-back victories for Hungary. The most recent edition of the tournament was in 2017 and it was Budapest Celtic who made it a hat-trick for Hungary. They picked up their second eurofootballfives.com title after also winning the 2013 Krakow Trophy.

They would kick us off in Group as they were technically the “away” team to Deportivo Dooradoyle. It was not a good start for the defending champions as they went down (1-0) to the Irish courtesy of a Pa O'Brien strike.

The first phase of the 2019 Budapest Fives would be decided upon a group basis with three groups of 7 teams.

The teams finishing 1st and 2nd in each group plus the two best 3rd placed teams would progress to the Cup competition which would be played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.

The remaining 3rd placed team plus the teams finishing 4th and 5th in each group along with the best of the 6th placed teams would progress to the Plate competition. This would be played as a knock-out phase with Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final.

The remaining two 6th placed teams and the two best 7th placed teams would go on to play in the Trophy competition (Semi-Finals and Final). The remaining 7th placed team would be eliminated.

Continuing in Group A we had 2016 champions Meglepetes who swept aside New Wave Funk, 5-1. Tibor Zambo, Mate Palmai, Roland Czeroczki and Gabor Joos (x2) were all on target for the Hungarians. Nick Moore scored for New Wave Funk.

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was Expats FC Paris versus Skidmarks.

Skidmarks were making their second appearance at the Budapest Fives. They appeared here in 2014 and won their 6-team group. They won their first two games 3-0 (v Contejus Hurricanes and RS Ocean Village FC). Meglepetes held up their progress with a 2-2 draw before they returned to winning ways (4-0) versus Bozeat FC. They completed the group with a 0-0 draw over Budapest Celtic Lions. They were looking on fine form until they came up against Argentina in the Quarter-Finals and lost 2-0.

Today they would start against Expats FC Paris (more on them later) and Skidmarks got off to a great start with Neil Taylor putting them 1-0 up. It would not be a winning start though as Julien Guillot equalised for the men from Paris. At full time, honours were even, 1-1.
