The 2019 Veterans Tournament Plate Final would be contested by Budapest Celtic Heroes and Old York Cosmos. This was our ninth Veterans Plate competition. The roll of honour so far read:

2014, Mallorca: €agles 3:36 (def. Dickie Dogs, 2-1)

2015, Algarve: Norton Old Boys (def. The Warriors, 1-0)

2016, Lisbon: Pioes (def. Crabtree Amblers, 2-0).

2017, Mallorca: The Warriors (def. Dickie Dogs, 2-0)

2019, Alicante: The Blackouts (def. CT1, 1-0)

On today's form there was very little to differentiate the two teams and it is often difficult to compare the stats as one group may well have been tougher than the other. Budapest Celtic Heroes edged the stats and when Old York Cosmos played Budapest Celtic Legends they had lost 2-0. However, in favour of Old York Cosmos was the fact that Budapest Celtic had played in 5 Plate Finals in our tournaments before today – and lost them all.

With the game underway there was as little to choose between the team two teams on the field of play as there had been on paper. Budapest Celtic Heroes had the edge at half-time though thanks to a goal from Kevin Vernooij. It was a goal that would ultimately win him the golden boot in this tournament.

In the second half Budapest Celtic Heroes were able to keep Old York Cosmos at arm's length and the equalizing goal never came for the English side.

For Old York Cosmos it was disappointment to fall just short. For now they had to be content with Runners-Up medals but maybe it will be winners medals and trophies waiting for them next time.

Today though we celebrate Budapest Celtic Heroes. After five runners-up finishes they finally had winner medals at Plate level in the presentation today. Huge congratulations to them Enjoy your victory and enjoy your celebrations.
