Round
7 would kick-off with Tom's Mum Is A Tramp FC
versus New Wave Funk. Tom's Mum Is A Tramp FC
were virtually ensured seventh position unless
they won by 10 goals which was unlikely with
a record of 2-27 in terms of goals so far. Realistically,
to reach the Trophy they needed to avoid being
the worst 7 th placed team. If they could get
a positive result from this game they would
have a chance.
New
Wave Funk had been drawn in the toughest group
in the 2018 Barcelona Fives. The draw seems
to have drawn them in the toughest group of
the 2019 Budapest Fives as well. They could
finish things on a high although 6th place was
the best they could finish. They would certainly
be going through to the Plate.
New
Wave Funk went on to record the biggest win
of the day, 8-2. Alex Jones was the key man
in the win as he scored five goals. Barney Wilde
opened his personal account with a brace whilst
John Naldrett completed the scoring.
There
were two goals for Tom's Mum Is A Tramp FC to
cheer as Craig Horsford-Brown and Joshua Jones
finished Group A with a goal to their name.
The
penultimate game of Group A looked to be a straight
shootout between Expats FC Paris and Budapest
Celtic Lions for Cup qualification.
From
an Expats FC Paris perspective, they needed a
win to guarantee qualification. 13 points would
guarantee a top 3 position and it would be enough
as one of the best third place teams at the very
least. They could potentially win the group with
a big win and Skidmarks beating Meglepetes. We
would then have 3 teams on 13 and it would all
be down to goal difference. A draw would probably
be enough as 9 points looked like being the points
haul of the teams in third in groups B & C.
They needed to avoid a loss to prevent Budapest
Celtic Lions moving above them.
From
a Budapest Celtic Lions perspective, only a win
would be good enough to climb above their opponents.
A draw or loss would mean a place in the Plate.
Skidmarks were also in the equation, if Skidmarks
lost and Budapest Celtic Lions then there would
be 3 teams on 10 points and it would come down
to goal difference for 2 nd to 4 th positions.
It
began well for Budapest Celtic Lions who opened
up a 2-0 lead thanks to Dani Harasztos and Vadim
Malyi. A late surge from Expats FC Paris saw them
restore parity at 2-2 thanks to Nathan Tracey
and Tristan Blundell. The draw meant Budapest
Celtic Lions would finish fifth. Expats FC Paris
were through to the Cup.
The
final fixture of Group A was Meglepetes versus
Skidmarks. Meglepetes “just” needed to avoid defeat
to win the Group A title. They had already qualified
for the Cup so well done to them.
There
was a lot more at stake for Skidmarks. At the
start of play there were in third position. A
draw would see them climb above Expats FC Paris
into second place on goal difference. A win would
see them draw level on 13 points with Meglepetes
at the top of the table. A win by two goals or
more would see Skidmarks win Group A which would
be a phenomenal achievement after a slow start
to the day.
If
Skidmarks were to lose this game then they would
finish in third position on 10 points. They would
have to hope this would be enough to qualify for
the Cup as one of the two best third placed teams.
A glance at Groups B and C suggested that would
be enough.
In
the end, just the one goal would settle this tie.
Roland Czeroczki scored a vital equalizer for
Meglepetes in Round 6. He was to score a vital
winner for Meglepetes in Round 7. The 1-0 win
meant Meglepetes won Group A and collected their
third successive group win at the Budapest Fives.
Well done to both teams for qualifying for the
Cup.
