So, onto Round 5 we go and still plenty to play for in Group A. The top 3 spots would potentially qualify for the Cup and there were still 6 teams in with a realistic chance of taking those top 3 spaces. New Wave Funk and Skidmarks were two of those. They currently sat in 6th and 4th positions respectively.

Skidmarks most recent eurofootballfives.com appearance was the 2018 Amsterdam Fives. They raced to 4 wins out of 4 in the group phase before a 2-0 defeat in their final game dented their record. It was academic though as they'd already done enough to qualify for the Cup and win Group C. In the knockout phase they drew 1-1 with Magnum of France but won through (3-2) on penalties. The Semi-Final saw an excellent 4-1 win over Israel's Municipality of Raanana. They set up a Cup Final with Melee FC. The two teams could not be separated in normal time and drew 0-0. They missed out on the title 1-0 in a penalty shoot-out. The pressure was now on Skidmarks to match/better that Amsterdam performance.

The winners of this game would have a great chance of qualifying for the Cup. The losers would see their hopes all but extinguished (even if not quite mathematically). A draw would not really help either team in the context of the Group A table. However, this game would not end in a draw. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and that man was Ricki Keeley. His goal, combined with a Paul Mulvey clean sheet, earned his team all 3 points and their second win on the bounce.

Meglepetes were on a superb run in our tournaments.

In 2015, lost just 1 game (in the group) as they went out in the Cup Semi-Finals (on pens).

In 2016, they were 7 games unbeaten (won the title)

In 2017, they were 6 games unbeaten (went out on pens)

Including today's 3 games, they were now 19 games without defeat in normal time in the Budapest Fives since they lost 1-0 to Csabagyongye in their third group game on the 2015 Budapest Fives. It was a superb record.

This was potentially one of their most difficult ties against the team they were locked at the top of the table with on 9 points, Deportivo Dooradoyle. It stated off well for the Hungarian team when Peter Hegedus put his team 1-0 up. The Irish were good for an equalizer though as Kevin Shine made it 1-1.

Meglepetes opened up a three point lead at the top of the table when Peter Hegedus scored his second of the game to win it for the home team, 2-1.

The 15th game of Group A was Tom's Mum Is A Tramp FC versus Budapest Celtic Lions. Tom's Mum Is A Tramp FC had struggled today with 3 defeats out of 3. They were up against it as their squad of 8 had been reduced to 5 shortly before the tournament so denying them the chance of some rotation and fresh legs.

It is said there is a curse of defending champions in our tournaments. Since our first event in 2007, only one team has successfully defended a title – that was Athletico Do Hollande who won the 2010 & 2011 Algarve Open. In all those years and over 100 tournaments only 6 champions have ever got to the Cup Final the following year.

  • Goldsmith Williams (Eng) – 2008 Prague Masters Champions. Lost 2009 final to Lozenetz City (Bul)
  • Lozenetz City (Bul) – 2009 Prague Masters Champions. Lost 2010 final to Olympic Phil Babb (Eng)
  • Deportivo (Cze) – 2010 Prague Trophy winners. Lost 2011 final to FC Radbroke (Eng).
  • Los Swallacticos (Nir) – 2013 Barcelona Fives champions. Lost 2014 final to Monexy (Ukr)
  • CIS Committee (Blr) – 2014 Budapest Fives champions. Lost 2015 final to Csabagyongye (Hun)
  • Bar Maruru (Spa) – 2018 Mallorca Tournament champions. Lost 2019 final to Ecuador 100% (Ecu).

As things stood, Budapest Celtic Lions had their work cut out to qualify for the Cup. They needed a win just to keep tabs on the teams above them. Even with a win they would remain in fifth position but they would be just a point off third place.

Goal difference could well prove important and Budapest Celtic Lions did their chances no harm at all in that respect. Maxime Bernard put them 1-0 up and they never looked back. Dani Harasztos scored four without reply to extend the lead to 5-0. Jesse van de Woestijne completed a fine 7-0 win with a late brace.
