FC Maroon (Eng)

Group B began with FC Maroon versus Csabagyongye or at least it would have until local transport prevented the local team making the kick-off. A quick re-shuffle of fixtures meant we would start with Breckland FC taking on Budapest Celtic Panthers. Breckland FC played in the 2011 Barca Fives where they finished 3rd in a 5-team group behind the 2008 Winners (Rapid Bosco Navas) and the eventual 2011 winners (Midshires FC). They went on to reach the Plate Semi-Finals and narrowly missed out on a debut Final. In the 2013 Lisbon Tournament, Breckland FC started slowly with two big defeats but then turned their form around with a 2-1 win over FC Dad (also here in Budapest) before two narrow defeats 4-3 to Portugal's Futsal Pioes and 3-2 to Hungary's Csabagyongye (also here in Budapest).

We've already seen Budapest Celtic have quite a pedigree in our European tournaments but this is the first appearance of the “Panthers” squad…..how would they fare amongst their more experienced Lions, Pumas and Tigers squads?

Pretty well is the answer as they got off to winning ways. A goal in each half from Bastien Morel and Etienne Joeffret earned the Panthers a 2-0 win.

Match 2 was now 9 Nana Budds versus A Boro Fiuk. 9 Nana Budds were making their third eurofootballfives.com appearance in Budapest. They got off to a cracking start winning the inaugural 2009 Valencia Fives. In the 2011 Algarve Open they finished in a strong group behind 2 times champions Goldsmith Williams in their group before a 3-1 Quarter-Final exit to Cheesecake FC.

A Boro Fiuk were making their debut – a Hungarian based side with ex-pat influence amongst their ranks. With the Hungarian sun beating down the two teams went head-to-head and matched each other blow for blow. Goalkeepers and defences dominated and both teams did boast very good keepers. It is therefore maybe no surprise that we reached half-time and then full-time at 0-0.

It was a solid point for the teams to begin their campaign with.

Due to the last minute re-arrangement of fixtures the Budapest Celtic Panthers were back in action again for their second fixture as FC Maroon would take to the field for the first time.

FC Maroon made their debut in the 2013 Lisbon Tournament. They were arguably the unluckiest team of the tournament with two victories to their name in the group phase before going out on goal difference. If we had a fair play award they would have won it – agreeing to play a Portuguese team who were late for kick-off when they could have claimed a 3-0 walkover which would have seen them go through. This game against the Portuguese ended in defeat and it was their opposition who went through on goal difference. FC Maroon – we salute your sportsmanship.

Budapest Celtic Panthers were already warmed up and maybe that was a factor that lead them to open the scoring in this encounter as Bastien Morel scored his second in as many matches. The Panthers had scored all 3 goals in Group B to date and they lead 1-0 at the break.

That was to change in the second period as FC Maroon drew level through Hertej Rattan. The equalizing goal meant the match would finish 1-1 and would help Budapest Celtic Panthers open up a 3 point lead at the top. FC Maroon were up and running with 4 more group games to build on this platform.
