The A Team (Fra)

So, onto Round 5 we go and the last attempts for the teams to stake their claim for the title, Cup qualification or Plate qualification. First up was the Budapest Celtic Pumas against Stanford FC.

The stakes were high for the Pumas – they needed to win and hope The A Team and Johnsbridge FC lose to guarantee Cup qualification. If the A Team or Johnsbridge FC picked up a point then goal difference would come in to play and a big win would be needed particularly to usurp the A Team. Anything less and the Cup would be beyond them and they could even be vulnerable in the Plate places to Cava Sundays.

For Stanford FC, they already knew they would play their knock-out football in the Trophy competition this afternoon whatever the result. They had just scored the only goal CIS had conceded and a result here would give them vital momentum going into the knock-out phase.

Stanford FC were improving fast and they were every bit a match for the Budapest Celtic Pumas. Half-time came and went with the score 0-0. The pressure was on the Pumas to pull out a result but the Stanford defence remained resolute. We reached full-time still at 0-0. Stanford FC had their first point. Budapest Celtic Pumas would be looking over their shoulders.

Johnsbridge FC and Cava Sundays went into their final fixtures both needing victory. Johnsbridge FC needed to better the result of the A Team to qualify for the Cup. If they matched the A Team result then it would come down to goal difference. An inferior result would mean the A Team qualify – BUT – the A Team had CIS to play!

Cava Sundays could make the Plate competition but it would take a big push from them. Budapest Celtic Pumas draw in the previous match meant Cava Sundays had to win and win by 4 goals to reach the Plate by levelling goal difference and going through on goals scored. They desperately needed an early goal to get the ball rolling.

The early goal was not forthcoming and we reached half-time all square at 0-0. As time went on Cava Sundays hopes were diminishing and it was becoming a question of could Johnsbridge FC find the goal they needed to push their claims for the Cup. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and that man was Kirpal Sadheura with his third goal of the tournament. It would earn his team a 1-0 victory.

Cava Sundays would join Stanford FC in the Trophy. Johnsbridge FC would hope CIS could maintain their winning streak so they would qualify for the Cup.

The 15th and final game of Group A was CIS versus The A Team. CIS had the only remaining 100% record in the tournament and although they were already crowned Group A champions they still had much to play for. The A Team's position was much less secure. They currently trailed Johnsbridge FC by 3 points but had a superior goal difference so any form of victory would see them leapfrog the English team and claim second.

CIS had scored in the first half of every single match to date but they were unable to breach The A Team defence in the opening period. The French team were unable to find the net themselves and we entered half-time level at 0-0. It meant that Group A would be decided in the final half of football.

As the sands of time ticked away the first goal was going to be crucial. When it came the goal was cheered by CIS and Johnsbridge FC as Aliaksandr Chaikouski grabbed his fourth of the tournament. It meant The A Team would now need 2 goals in the final few minutes. Chasing the goal they conceded again through Aliaksandr Lisouki and the three points were in the bag.

CIS claimed the Group A title in style and would be joined in the Cup by Johnsbridge FC. The A Team would progress to the Plate competition.
