After
80 games of football we came down to the most
important of them all. Game 81 – The 2014 Budapest
Fives Cup Final.
The
two teams set to do battle for the honour and
glory of victory were CIS Committee and Argentina.
CIS Committee were reminiscent of 2012 winners
ABC United of Romania – they had cruised through
the Group phase without humiliating their opponents
before really cranking it up in the knock-out
phase. They were on a run of 7 successive wins
and it would take some performance to stop them.
Argentina
we were sure would be able opponents who had stuttered
a little in the middle of the Group phase (against
top opposition) but had recorded 3 successive
wins and some big scalps along the way. It was
all to play for!
The
game was very close and there was not much between
the teams at all. You could argue that CIS Committee
probably had the better off possession and territory
but then Argentina probably had the best chances
especially on the counter-attack. However, neither
team could find that moment of magic to unlock
their opponents' defence as we finished 0-0. Penalty
shoot-out time!
Penalty
shoot-outs are becoming the trend in our tournaments
with Team Bear winning the 2013 Budapest Fives
on penalties last year and recently in Valencia
just two weeks ago Sparta took the 2014 Valencia
Fives also on penalties.
It
would be CIS Committee to shoot first….
*
First up was Aliaksandr Lisouski who hit the post,
on to the keeper, back on to the post and in.
1-0 Belarus.
*
Captain Gabriel Lopez Libardi thundered his penalty
past the goalkeeper for 1-1.
*
A big big moment as Henadzi Nestsiuk saw his penalty
cannon back of the bar and out.
*
It was advantage Argentina who could go ahead
if Kia Bazargani could score but his effort was
saved well by the CIS goalkeeper.
*
Vitali Ledenev with 6 goals in the tournament
made no mistake to put CIS Committee 2-1 up.
*
Rodrigo De O Belichar had to score to keep Argentina
in it and he lived up to the task, 2-2.
We
were now into sudden death penalties. 2-2 became
3-3 which became 4-4 which then became 5-5 as
all 6 penalties in sudden death were converted.
It was time for the CIS Committee goalkeeper to
take his penalty and he powered it home for 6-5.
Argentina's 7th penalty proved the decisive one
as it hit the post and bounced clear which sparked
wild celebrations amongst the CIS Committee squad.
Our
sincere commiserations to Argentina who had come
so close to glory but just missed out. It was
a superb day's play for them though and a quality
debut.
Our
congratulations go to CIS Committee on their first
eurofootballfives.com victory. There is also congratulations
to Dydynho who added the 2014 Budapest Fives Top
Goalscorer award to the one he collected in the
2013 Krakow Trophy.
