As the 2014 Budapest Fives Cup Quarter-Finals were about to get underway we were down to the elite 8 teams in the tournament representing Argentina, Belarus, England and Hungary.

We started on Pitch A with CIS Committee versus 9 Nana Budds. Both teams had superb records in the Group Phase with CIS Committee boasting the tournament's only 100% record. For their part, 9 Nana Budds had yet to concede a goal and naturally enough were unbeaten. A Quarter-Final against the team from Belarus was scant reward for their morning efforts!

We expected a close game with goals at a premium as there had only been one goal conceded between these teams in the Group stages. For much of the first half we were level at 0-0 until shortly before the break CIS Committee broke the deadlock. Vitali Ledenev scored the goal which had a profound effect on the game. You could visibly see the 9 Nana Budds shoulders sink as they knew how tough it would be to get back into this. CIS Committee had an aura of success about them and with it a big psychological advantage.

In the second half, this advantage paid dividends and with 9 Nana Budds working hard to get back into it the gaps appeared at the back for the first time today. CIS Committee were clinical as Aliaksandr Chaikouski and Henadzi Nestsiuk increased the lead. Final score, 3-0.

It was tournament over for 9 Nana Budds but we believe was arguably their best eurofootballfives.com appearance – even better than their 2009 Valencia Fives triumph.

In the Plate competition we saw a Budapest Celtic derby with the Panthers taking on the Pumas. There was to be another derby in the Cup competition with the Tigers meeting the Lions

Budapest Celtic Tigers had performed superbly to win Group C which also featured Argentina and 2-times eurofootballfives winners FC Radbroke. The Lions themselves could be proud of progressing Group D which featured 2-times winners Skidmarks and also a strong Meglepetes side. The Lions were also current Krakow Trophy champions.

It looked a close match up and on paper and so it proved on the pitch. The half-time whistle blew with the teams level at 0-0 and the full-time whistle did exactly the same. These two teams would be split by penalties.

It was the Lions to strike first and they scored first to lead 1-0. A Tigers miss was followed by a Lions miss which was then followed by another Tigers miss so were still 1-0 going into the last round of penalties. If the Lions scored their next penalty they were through – they did.

The Tigers were out – they reached the Cup Final here in 2011 and 2012 but would not progress any further today. The Lions roared on.

Quarter-Final three saw Csabagyongye take on Johnsbridge FC. Back in 2011, Csabagyongye reached the Cup Quarter-Final stage on their eurofootballfives.com debut. Since then they won the Plate in 2012 and the Plate Champion of Champions in 2013. They were back on the biggest stage of all here in 2014 looking for a third successive victory on home soil.

That's quite a build-up we've given them and was the task of Johnsbridge FC to see that history counted for nothing when the two teams took to the field. Johnsbridge FC had enjoyed a superb debut before – qualifying for the Cup in a group that featured CIS Committee and 2013 Krakow Trophy Runners-Up (The A Team) was no easy feat.

As with the Budapest Celtic derby, we reached half-time level at 0-0. A penalty shoot-out would not be required this time though as we were to get a winner in normal time. There would be just the one goal and the decisive strike came from Peter Dovak (the Top Goalscorer in the 2013 Plate Champion of Champions).

Csabagyongye were through and it was goodbye for now to Johnsbridge FC. They were hugely impressive on debut and showed the potential for a future eurofootballfives.com victory.

The final Quarter-Final was Skidmarks versus Argentina. At the start of the day there were two teams aiming to be only the second team in eurofootballfives.com history to record a third tournament victory. With FC Radbroke failing to qualify, Skidmarks were now the sole team looking to achieve that honour.

Skidmarks qualified as the Group D winners with 3 wins and 2 draws. Argentina, on debut, were similar with 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. Given the pedigree of Skidmarks and the fact they had reached the Cup Final in every tournament they had played you would have made them favourites. Argentina looked a hugely talented side though and were making full use of their talents as they took a 1-0 lead into half-time in this game thanks to Kya Bazargani.

Skidmarks were now in a tricky position of having to chase the game in search of an equalizer that would leave them vulnerable to a killer blow on the break. It was a risk they had to take. The next goal was oh so important and when it came it was Rodrigo De O Belichar who scored it and effectively sealed his team's passage into the Semi-Finals.

Final score 2-0 and it was Argentina who progressed. It was odd to say farewell to Skidmarks at this stage of the tournament but we thank them for continuing to support our tournaments. It was good to see you at the Post Tournament Social and we hope you have another crack at title #3.
