For the eleventh time in eurofootballfives.com history we had a Trophy competition to supplement our traditional Cup and Plate competitions. It was the fifth successive year we had one at our Barcelona Fives tournament. This was the second time we had a 32-team event to go with 6 x 24-team event and 3 x 25-team events we have had across our destinations over recent seasons. This represented a great opportunity for the teams finishing 5th and 6th in the group phase to turn their fortunes around and walk away with a trophy.

The two teams that would get us going were Leek High Boys versus Fail Madrid 2. This time last year Leek High Boys were winning their Plate Quarter-Final on their way to a Runners-Up finish. An extra point and an extra position higher and they could be trying to go one step further in the Plate. Instead, they were in the Trophy and as such would be one of the favourites.

Fail Madrid 2 were the second of the two Fail Madrid squads but they were in the Quarter-Finals whilst the 1 st team had been eliminated. Could they carry the torch for the Fail Madrid team and collect some winners medals?

It was Leek High Boys who kept their day going. Kieran Wood scored the first goal of the game before Tommy Coates, who had been prolific today, added two more to send his team through to the Semi-Finals.

We continued the Trophy Quarter-Final action on Pitch B as Ze'Argon took on Wonder Vision. It was the 5th placed team from Group C taking on the 6th placed team from Group D.

Argon'ze were eliminated at this same stage 12 months ago so the aim for Ze'Argon was to go one step further (at least) than their sister squad. Ze'Argon had one member of that Argon'ze squad from last year in the form of Alexandre Duivon. For him it would be great to get revenge after they went down 4-1 to Bolivar last season.

Ze'Argon had a mixed set of results this morning with 3 wins and 4 defeats with 8 goals scored and 17 conceded. Wonder Vision had 1 win, 2 draws and 4 defeats with 4 goals scored and 9 conceded. The records of the two teams suggested that the French side would be favourites.

The French team lived up to their billing as they edged a close game. A Jean-Marie Anar goal, his third of the day, won the match for Ze'Argon. We had to say farewell to Wonder Vision and we hoped they enjoyed their experience at the 2017 Barcelona Fives.

On Pitch C it was CAP FC versus CBD Boys. Both of these teams had played at higher levels in the knock-out phase of our tournaments before so would be considered amongst the teams to watch to lift the Trophy. CAP FC were Cup Semi-Finalists at the 2016 Riga Tournament. CBD Boys were 2011 Barcelona Fives Plate Quarter-Finalists and 2012 Valencia Fives Cup Quarter-Finalists. Could the Omani team reach a first Semi-Final in our events?

It would be hard to pick a winner based on the group phase performance of these two teams. CAP FC had the higher finish as they finished 5th (compared to 6 th for CBD Boys) and had more wins (3) and more points (9) than their opponents. However, CBD Boys had the better goal difference (+1) with more goals scored (11) and less conceded (10).

As with most games in these tournaments the first goal is often crucial. It was CBD Boys who scored it and put CAP FC on the back foot. It would be difficult for them now as they had to chase the game and whilst pushing forward they would inevitably be leaving more gaps at the back. CBD Boys then turned 1-0 into 2-0 and it was their twin strike-force of Rubik Menezes and Daley Mathias who did the damage.

CAP FC's participation at the 2017 Barcelona Fives was over in a playing sense. They could now relax and watch the rest of the action unfold (no doubt with a cold beer in hand).

Last but not least was P Slayers against Tysers.

If we were to rank the 8 teams in the Trophy competition based upon their points tally and separating those on equal points by goal difference the teams would rank like this:

  1. Leek High Boys
  2. CAP FC
  3. Ze'Argon
  4. CBD Boys
  5. P Slayers
  6. Fail Madrid 2
  7. Tysers
  8. Wonder Vision

So far, the teams ranked 1, 3 and 4 had made it through. Could the fifth ranked P Slayers make it through against the seventh ranked Tysers. P Slayers had started the day brilliantly with 7 points from 9 but had then suffered four defeats in a row. The break after the group phase was a chance to hit the reset button. Tyser's wins had come in the last three games including a win over P Slayers sister squad, T Bashers (3-2).

P Slayers would exact revenge on behalf of T Bashers as Nick Pocock and Jon Trout scored their third and second goals of the day respectively. Tysers did pull one back through Jamie Davy but sadly for him and his team it would be his team's last goal of the day.
