It was 16 games down and 12 to play as we entered Round 5 of Group D. We began on Pitch A with Wonder Vision versus FourInTina. This was a battle between two teams who really needed the points. Wonder Vision currently sat in 8th with 2 draws and 2 defeats. FourInTina currently sat in fifth with 2 wins and 2 defeats. FourInTina were only 1 point off top though as just 1 point separated the top 5, 2 points separated 1st to 6th and the top 7 were all within a victory of each other.

Despite suffering two defeats in a row, FourInTina were still well placed and if they could return to winning ways here had a chance of leading the group at the end of Round 5.

The main problem for Wonder Vision at this stage seemed to be scoring goals. Defensively they were fine and were joint third in the group in terms of defence. However, they had only scored once and this was proving to be their Achilles heel. FourInTina had conceded more than anyone in Group D with 8 so far so this represented a chance for Wonder Vision.

FourInTina were also the top scorers in the group with 8 and their games were unsurprisingly the highest scoring in Group D. We were intrigued to see whether it would be the low-scoring games of Wonder Vision or the high-scoring games of FourInTina that would set the pattern of play for this fixture.

It was to be the former but it was to be FourInTina who came away with the points. A solitary Keiran Kendrick goal would decide the game. The Welsh team was upwardly mobile again. Wonder Vision were left licking their wounds.

The next game in Group D was sixth placed Fail Madrid 1 hosting fourth placed Deportivo 2.0. Fail Madrid 1 came into the game on a good run of form as they were unbeaten in 3 games (1 win, 2 draws). Deportivo 2.0 had opened up with a win before 2 defeats in Rounds 2 and 3. They got back to winning ways and as Round 5 kicked off were just a point off the top of Group D.

Fail Madrid 1 were actually only a point behind Deportivo 2.0 and they could potentially go top with a win and other results going their way. What we saw was a very close game and ultimately there would be just the one goal to settle matters. The game was calling out for a hero and the man to answer that call was Kevin Shine. He became the first man to score against Fail Madrid 1 since Round 2.

The 1-0 win lifted Deportivo 2.0 up to third position and they remained a point off the top spot. Fail Madrid 1 remained in sixth but they had lost ground on those ahead of them.

The next game on Pitch C in Group D would be a key battle between Danish Dynamites who were one of three teams sharing the lead on 7 points. Their opponents would be Club Esportiu Llefia who were only 3 points behind but down in 7th. Before kick-off, they were in the bizarre situation of a win putting them joint top but a defeat could send them down to 8 th (subject to other results).

This was Club Esportiu Llefia's third Barcelona Fives campaign and their group record so far read:

2015: Played 4, Won 2, Drew 2, Lost 0, For 9, Against 7, Points 8 (1st)

2016: Played 7, Won 4, Drew 1, Lost 2, For 20, Against 6, Points 13 (3rd)

2017: Played 4, Won 1, Drew 1, Lost 2, For 6, Against 7, Points 4 (7th) *so far.

Danish Dynamites were a team on a good run. Following opening game defeat they had taken 7 points from a possible 9 and were looking good. Their defeat was 2-0 against Deportivo 2.0. Club Esportiu Llefia had beaten Deportivo 2.0 2-1 which really showed any team was capable of beating any other in this high quality group.

We have to say we expected a close game and that's what we got….at first. Jens Bodker Knudsen put Danish Dynamites ahead before Alfred Jimenez De Andres equalized for Club Esportiu Llefia. It was a landmark goal for De Andres as it was his 25 th at the Barcelona Fives.

Jesper Frisch then restored Danish Dynamites lead with two goals to make it 3-1. Jens Bodker Knudsen scored his second of the game which preceded Jesper Frisch's hat-trick goal. It was a great 5-1 win for Danish Dynamites that saw them lead Group D on goal difference at the end of Round 5.

That left us with P Slayers versus Elcombe Old Boys. This was a battle between the top two teams in Group D at the start of the round.

We often say in these tournaments that momentum plays a big part. If you are winning games it can become a habit. If you are losing, even if playing well, then it is easy to get frustrated and for results to tail off. The momentum was certainly with Elcombe Old Boys as they came into the game with 2 wins in a row. P Slayers had taken just 1 point over the same period. Although they were joint top, P Slayers needed a result to re-ignite their campaign. It would not be easy against the defending champions though.

Elcombe Old Boys had an amazing record at the Barcelona Fives. Before today, since their first game at the 2013 edition of the tournament they had played 29 games with 19 wins, 7 draws and 3 defeats. They had scored 59 goals and conceded just 14 with 18 clean sheets.

It was the defending champions who drew first blood as Peter Lewis scored his first of the day to put his team 1-0 up. Marcus Faure also opened his personal account and made it 2-0. In goal, Andrew Gartshore kept his second clean sheet of the tournament.

Elcombe Old Boys stayed joint top of the table but Danish Dynamites moved above them on goal difference. P Slayers slipped from second to fifth – still just 3 points off top though.
