Before we get to the action in Round 7 we just needed to tidy up the admin that saw us award Spider Mans & Eagle their 3-0 walkover win versus Bolivar.

Spider Mans & Eagle hadn't needed much help so far today as they ended the group phase unbeaten and would march on to the knock-out competition in confidence as Group A winners.

So, onto the on-field games of Round 7 we go and the last attempts for the teams to stake their claim for the title, Cup, Plate or Trophy qualification. The games would kick-off more or less simultaneously so teams just had to concentrate on their own games and hope other results would be decided in their favour (if required).

On Pitch B we had Deportivo Dooradoyle versus CBD Boys as Ireland met Oman. These two teams would finish sixth and seventh but we did not yet know in which order. What was at stake was a place in the Trophy for the team that could finish sixth, elimination faced the team who would finish seventh.

Deportivo Dooradyle had won the Trophy competition back at the 2013 Barcelona Fives. If they could get through and go on and win the Trophy then they would be only the second team in our history to win 2 Trophy competitions at our tournaments.

CBD Boys would ensure the Irish lads never got that chance in the knock-out phase. The boys (“Boys”) from Oman saved their best performance for last as they kept their first clean sheet of the day and also rattled in four goals at the same time. Daley Mathias and Rubik Menezes had been their sharp shooters so far and they were to be again with two goals each here. The final score was Deportivo Dooradoyle 0-4 CBD Boys. CBD Boys were through to the Trophy.

It was farewell to Deportivo Dooradoyle. Their squad suffered from injuries today so they were not at full throttle. They still had interest in the tournament though with their Deportivo 2.0 squad (see Group D).

Pitch C would play host to Leek High Boys versus Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau as attention turned towards the top of the table.

Sigurdsson Advice Bureau had slipped to third after their defeat in the last round to L'Albiceleste. Their fate was now out of their own hands. They had to win this game and then hope Fylingdales FC beat L'Albiceleste. Fylingdales could still pip Sigurdsson's but Sigurdsson's had a 2 goal better goal difference.

Leek High Boys were left marooned in fifth position. They were 4 points off Fylingdales FC in fourth position above them and had a four point cushion over CBD Boys below them. They could, though, play the role of party poopers for Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau's Cup hopes.

Tommy Coates was Leek High Boys top scorer at the 2016 Barcelona Fives. He scored 5 goals last year and this year he had equaled that tally already. He was on target again here – not once, but twice – to sink Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau in their pursuit of a Cup place. His goals earned a 2-0 win for Leek High Boys as they finished the group phase in style.

Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau could still be proud of their morning's work though with their haul of 12 points and their third place finish. They would play in the Plate competition this afternoon.

The 28th and final game of Group A was Fylingdales FC versus L'Albiceleste. Both teams needed a result.

Fylingdales FC were in fourth and could climb above their opponents into second place with a win (assuming Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau failed to win). If Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau also won then Fylingdales would need to win by at least two more to go through on goal difference. Anything less than a win for Fylingdales FC would mean they qualified for the Plate.

The games were played more-or-less simultaneously (pitches ran at slightly different speeds during the day) so L'Albiceleste may not have known that Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau were losing on Pitch C. As far as they knew, they had to win to guarantee their place in the Cup. A draw may be enough as long as Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau did not win by 6 or more. If they lost then they would be in the Plate behind their opponents and possibly down in fourth if Sigurdsson's Advice Bureau also won.

So, who got the result they needed? Look away Fylingdales FC fans as it was a case of “Allez Les Bleus”. Cedric Castarede scored the opener for L'Albiceleste and also the second as they established a 2-0 lead. Antoine Loscul made it 3-0 which preceded Cedric Castarede completing his hat-trick.

The result meant L'Albiceleste had qualified for the Cup in second position. Fylingdales FC would finish fourth and qualify for the Plate.
