GBS Reds (Cze)

The 2012 Berlin Fives Plate Final would be contested by East Compton Seagulls (Eng) and GBS Reds (Cze). With seven games of football already under their belt the two teams would need to summon one last burst of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners and not runners-up medals in the presentation.

East Compton Seagulls were in a final on debut so the whole experience was new to them. They had shown impressive form in the early stages of Group C and then in the knock-out stage. We've said before that we were surprised they didn't qualify for the Cup but did have a tough group so it was no surprise for us to see them in the Final….could they go all the way.

GBS Reds already had a Plate win under their belt in the 2010 Prague Trophy – on that occasion it was a Round Robin 4-team group they won to claim the title but the last game was effectively a Final as both teams (GBS and DHL Prague Red) were level on 6 points so it was effectively a knock-out game. Could they claim a second Plate victory?

In fact, GBS Reds were looking to become only the fourth team to win two or more Plate titles. The current roll call reads;

4 - CSF: Krakow Trophy (2008), Algarve Open (2009), Amsterdam Fives (2009), Valencia Fives (2009)

2 – Rigford Seahawks: Prague Trophy (2009), Amsterdam Fives (2011)

2 – Eagles Old Boys/UnAthletic: Krakow Trophy (2010), Algarve Open (2011)

With the game underway it was GBS Reds who struck first when Achille Anague gave GBS Reds the lead. It was his 11th goal of the day and he had scored in 7 of the 8 games GBS Reds had played today. His goal set the Czech team on their way and when Vincent Solem made it 2-0 before the break, GBS Reds were firmly in the driving seat.

East Compton Seagulls were up against it now with just one half of football left to turn Runners-Up medals into Winners medals. It was never easy chasing a game in these tournaments as 5-a-side football always leaves you prone to the counter attack if you throw men forward unless you can get defenders back quickly – never easy towards the back end of a tournament. The next goal of the game went to GBS Reds and was turned in by Josef Salatek to make it 3-0. The goal all but sealed the victory for GBS Reds and a second Plate win was theirs.

East Compton Seagulls, whilst disappointed, should not be disconsolate though as they added a great deal to this tournament and we are sure success will come to them in future tournaments.

For today though, we present you the 2012 Berlin Fives Plate Winners – GBS Reds.
