Next
up was a crucial game in the context of the
group as 3rd placed GBS Reds played host to
1st placed Bafta Boys. The Czech team could
potentially qualify for the Cup with a draw
if East Compton Eagles lost their last game
but, to put things in their own hands, needed
a win here. If they did Bafta Boys could potentially
miss out on the Cup having led the table at
the end of all previous rounds and that would
be sensational. A draw would guarantee Bafta
Boys a Cup place and a win would give them a
good shout of taking the Group B title – subject
to East Compton Eagles winning and by what margin.
So,
as we often say, it was all to play for. Joe
Bardwell opened the scoring with his 9th goal
of the day to give Bafta Boys a vital lead.
It was going to be tough for GBS Reds to win
this in the second period from a goal down but
if they could grab one who knows? In the end
it was Bardwell who doubled the advantage to
make it 2-0 and that's the way it finished.
Bardwell was emerging as a strong contender
for the day's Golden Boot award.
The
result meant that GBS Reds would finish 3rd
and miss out on the Cup for the first time in
3 tournaments and play in the Plate where they
would surely be contenders. Bafta Boys were
top on 13 points and with a healthy goal difference.
They were champions elect….could East Compton
Eagles rain on their parade.
