The 2012 Berlin Fives marked eurofootballfives debut not only in Berlin but also in Germany and it proved to be a spectacular addition to our tournament calendar. We had a first class venue and great weather to mark the occasion.

First up on Pitch A two familiar teams to eurofootballfives.com as DHL Prague Red took on Northern Monkeys. DHL Prague were making a record 14th appearance with t heir best achievements to date being a 2nd Place finish in the 2007 Prague Trophy, victory in the 2008 Barca Fives Plate plus Plate runners-up finishes in the 2008 Prague Trophy, 2010 Krakow Trophy, 2010 Prague Masters and 2010 Prague Trophy. Berlin was their 6th foreign adventure after trips to Barcelona (x2), Krakow (x2) and Budapest.

Northern Monkeys were making a welcome return to eurofootballfives.com action. They made history in 2007 winning our first ever tournament – the Krakow Trophy. They returned to Krakow in 2008 to defend their title but missed out in the Quarter-Finals when they lost to eventual winners, Red Light Runners. In the 2009 Algarve Open they were back on form winning their group going 5 games unbeaten until another Quarter-Final exit at the hands of Portuguese team Maritimo Olhanense. After a little gap they were back in action in Berlin.

It was first blood to the Northern Monkeys when David Dyson struck the opening blow. Viktor Kiyashko equalised to make it 1-1 for the Czech team and the points were shared. A solid start for both teams.

Next up was Hasanheide Camels against Horribly Hungover. Hasanheide Hotspur were making their debut representing Germany so were an unknown quantity to us. Horribly Hungover were no strangers to our tournaments though and came to Berlin following tours to Amsterdam, Prague and Barcelona. With an ever-changing name they began their journey as Amsterdamage who made the Plate Semi-Finals in the 2009 Amsterdam Fives before crashing out in the cruellest of fashions, on penalties, to miss out on a debut final. One year later in the 2010 Prague Masters, as Masters of the Pooniverse, they reached the Plate Semi-Finals again when an injury depleted squad narrowly missed out to DHL Prague Red. In Barcelona last year (as Warlords Against Narrow Klunge) they finished 3 rd in their 5 team group and narrowly missed out on a 3rd successive Plate Semi-Final going down in the Quarters.

It was Hasanheide Camels who made the perfect start to their eurofootballfives careers when they opened the scoring when Steve Tattum gave them a first half lead. It was a goal that was good enough to earn them all 3 points as the game finished 1-0.

The final two teams in the opening round of fixtures were also regular competitors in our tournaments. Energie Cobalt were the first of two teams from the CSF. The CSF are the most travelled team in eurofootballfives.com history. They started their journey with us in Krakow 2007 and since then have followed it up with Prague 2007, Krakow 2008, Barcelona 2008, Algarve 2009, Amsterdam 2009, Valencia 2009, Prague 2010 and the 2011 Mallorca Tournament.

The Berlin Fives makes it appearance number 10 and in their 9 previous tournaments they have reached 5 Plate Finals, winning 4 of them and 3 of those were in the 2009 season (Algarve, Amsterdam & Valencia). An unbelievable hat-trick that will probably never be repeated!

FC Wein Schweine Fliegen made their debut in the 2011 Budapest Fives for captain Jack Croft's stag weekend. They entered three teams with the pick of the squads going on to reach the Plate Final finishing Runners-up to Hungarian side Al-Kaloida. They returned as Arse-A-Lona FC in the 2011 Barca Fives where they reached the Plate Semi-Finals and lost narrowly, 1-0, to the eventual winners HMS Sultan FC. What could they manage on their 3rd appearance?

Well, it was fairly even early doors as the teams turned round at the break level at 1-1 thanks to goals from Vincent Nwana (Energie Cobalt) and Jonathan Wray (FC Wein Schweine Fliegen). The second half saw Wray score again to put his side 2-1 up. He went on to complete his hat-trick for 3-1 and then again to wrap up a 4-1 victory. With the win it took them top of the table.
