The
10th June saw our annual Summer extravaganza of
football with the open age and veterans' tournaments
sharing the same stage. With 18 open age and 12
veterans teams (a sell out for both) we had a
great day of football in a stunning beach setting.
The
open age kicked us off first and we witnessed
an imperious display from Wilmslow Whoppers who
produced 8 wins in 8 games to emerge victorious.
Only Spanish side Son Gual got near them with
a narrow 1-0 defeat in the group phase and then
a 2-0 defeat in the Cup Final. There was added
success for Jamie Frost of Wilmslow Whoppers who
was the top goalscorer with 15 goals. In the Plate
competition it was Inter Balear who were victorious
after a sensational 6-4 Plate Final over Shergold's
Hairline Harriers.
In
the Veterans tournament, FC Mahou were just as
impressive as they surged to victory - the first
English team to win the Vets since the tournament's
inception in 2013. As it turned out, FC Mahou
player Steve Sachro used to teach the Wilmslow
Whoppers so it was a double success for him (and
no doubt a bit of a shock to see his former students
on the same football tour!). Southgate County
Vets were runners-up and the most improved side
in the tournament - eliminated after the group
phase in Lisbon 2016 and going all the way to
the final in 2017! In the Plate, The Warriors
picked up their first success in our tournaments
as they defeated Dickie Dogs. Dickie Dogs were
also the bridesmaids here in 2014.
The
top goalscorer in the Veterans tournament was
Pete Cox of FC Mahou with 10 goals from his 7
games.
Thank
you to everyone who participated at the event
and ensured it was a massive success! |
