The climax of the day's events had arrived - The 2017 Mallorca Veterans Tournament Cup Final.

Whilst those teams who had battled hard yet departed could enjoy a nice cool beer on a warm and sunny day, there was still work to do for our two finalists. What a Cup Final we had in prospect! We had two teams who had both excelled throughout the day and I don't think anyone could argue that they didn't deserve to be in the Final.

The two teams;

FC Mahou: Played 6, won 6. They had scored 26 goals along the way and conceded just one. They were winners of the 2011 Prague Masters and 2013 Algarve Open. They could become only the fourth team to win 3 (or more) eurofootballfives.com titles.

Southgate County Vets: Played 6, won 6, lost 0 today. They had scored 13 goals and conceded three. Their Open Age team won the Plate at the 2016 Lisbon Tournament so this could be some more silverware heading back to London.

The referee blew the whistle to kick us off and FC Mahou wrestled the ascendency in the early stages. It was going to be key for Southgate County Vets to be at their best defensively and keep FC Mahou out for as long as possible, frustrate them and make the most of their own opportunities when they came but FC Mahou scored fairly early in the piece. With their tails up they added two more and were in cruise control. Pete Armstrong scored twice and Mike Brandon took his tally for the day to 8 as FC Mahou raced into a 3-0 lead. Then just before the break Ken Middleton fired in a free-kick for Southgate County Vets to make it 3-1.

The second half kicked off with Southgate County Vets needing a couple of goals to force this into a penalty shoot-out – certainly not impossible. They had to score the next goal though and they came close a couple of times clipping the outside of the post and going narrowly wide from distance. The next goal would decide if this was game on or game over. It was game over. Mike Brandon scored his second of the game and ninth of the tournament to make it 4-1. Any hopes of a comeback for Southgate County Vets were extinguished. That was indeed how it finished.

We would like to congratulate Southgate County Vets on a superb performance over the course of the tournament and commiserations on missing out in the Cup Final. They would collect runners-up medals in the presentation.

The individual honour of the day was a close run thing. Pete Cox (10) edged out his colleague Mike Brandon (9) to win the top goalscorer award. Many congratulations to Pete who becomes the second man from the FC Mahou camp to win such an award. Mike Brandon won the equivalent trophy at the 2013 Algarve Open.

Congratulations to FC Mahou - they became the fifth team to claim glory at a eurofootballfives.com Veterans Tournament and the first travelling team to do so. The Veterans Tournament will soon be scheduled for 2018 and we hope you can all join us next year.
