Round
5 began with Green Man FC and Inter Balear. The
two teams were in fourth and fifth position at
the start of this final round with Inter Balear
holding a point advantage over Green Man.
So,
what was at stake for these two teams?
For
Inter Balear, a win would see them finish third
if Son Gual or McArthurs's Big Macs lost (they
were playing each other). This would possibly
be a route into the Cup as one of the best third
placed teams (although unlikely). If Son Gual
and McArthur's Big Macs drew, Inter Balear needed
a two goal win to go through on goals scored (or
a bigger win to go through on goal difference).
Anything less than a win and they would slip to
5th and possibly even 6th if Southgate County
upset Wilmslow Whoppers.
For
Green Man FC the Cup looked beyond them – third
was still possible with a win and a Son Gual defeat
and a swing in goal difference. 6 points was not
likely to be enough to go through as one of the
best third placed finishers. A draw or win would
most likely see them reach the Plate. A defeat
risked them being eliminated.
It
was advantage Inter Balear in the first half with
Antonio Lobo Blanco scoring twice. In the second
half Green Man FC hit back through captain Colin
Hatton but Inter Balear also struck in the second
half. Antonio Lobo Blanco completed a hat-trick
and Pascal Moreno Cortes put the icing on the
cake.
Two
games to go – or so we thought! The next fixture
was due to be Son Gual versus McArthur's Big Macs.
It looked to be a tasty battle between second
and third position. McArthur's Big Macs relatively
small squad had picked up some injuries and fatigue
and therefore had to withdraw from the game. As
the Spanish would say “No Presentado”. Son Gual
were awarded a 3-0 win that saw them qualify for
the Cup.
Into
Game 15 of Group B and there was still Southgate
County versus Wilmslow Whoppers to decide how
the table would look in the annals of history.
Wilmslow Whoppers came into the game knowing they
had already wrapped up Cup qualification and the
Group B title but they would surely want to keep
their run going into the knock-out phase. They
also had a 100% record to keep up.
For
Southgate County, they needed a point to guarantee
a place in the Plate and they could even get away
with defeat if it was not too heavy. Should they
lose they could finish joint 5th or 6th so would
need to finish above Green Man FC on goal difference
to be 5th. If they finished 6 th they would need
to have a better goal difference than the Funky
Shepherds in Group C (also on 3 points, -6). Southgate
County were on -6 so it looked precarious. A game
against Wilmslow Whoppers was probably not what
they needed but that's what they had in front
of them.
Wilmslow
Whoppers continued as they had done for most of
the morning – solid in defence and fluent up front.
They reached half-time with their clean sheet
intact and Peter Boyle and Jamie Frost both adding
to their tally.
In
the second half Neil Spackman added his third
of the tournament for Southgate County. Jamie
Frost added another to take his tally to 10 –
the current golden boot leader. Final score, 3-1.
As
it turned out Southgate County had done enough
though to qualify for the Plate. Wilmslow Whoppers
were going through to the knock-out phase as the
tournament favourites.
