The Warriors (Eng)

The 2017 Veterans Tournament Plate Final would be contested by The Warriors and Dickie Dogs. This was our fourth Veterans Plate competition and the roll of honour so far read:

2014, Mallorca: €agles 3:36 (def. Dickie Dogs, 2-1)

2015, Algarve: Norton Old Boys (def. The Warriors, 1-0)

2016, Lisbon: Pioes (def Crabtree Amblers, 2-0).

The eagle eyed amongst you will have noticed that The Warriors and Dickie Dogs both feature in the roll call above. Sadly, for both these teams, in the past they have ended up on the wrong end of the result in the final. Obviously, for one of these teams that would change and they would be picking up the winners' trophy and the winners medals in the presentation this evening.

Let's have a look at the two teams' form today:

The Warriors

Played 6, Won 3, Drawn 0, Lost 3, For 8, Against 5

Group finish: 4th.

Dickie Dogs

Played 6, Won 2, Drawn 2, Lost 2, For 9, Against 8

Group finish: 4th.

On today's form there was very little to differentiate the two teams and it is often difficult to compare the stats as one group may well have been tougher than the other. It was going to be tough to pick a winner but it is worth noting both teams finished fourth in their group and knocked out higher placed teams in the Semi-Finals.

With the game underway it was The Warriors who hit the front. Andy Chrascina had certainly brought his shooting boots with him today as he scored #4 of the tournament for him. Could Dickie Dogs summon up that one last burst of energy to push for victory or at least a draw to take us to penalties?

The Warriors defence held firm with Matt Elsey in goal looking a safe pair of hands. He and his defence managed to keep the Dickie Dogs attack at bay. At the other end Andy Chrascina scored his second of the game to ensure the Plate victory would be going to The Warriors. Final score, 2-0.

For Dickie Dogs it was disappointment to fall just short and for the second time at our Mallorca Veterans event. For now they had to be content with Runners-Up medals but maybe it will be winners medals and trophies waiting for them next time. Third time lucky perhaps?

We leave the Plate competition for today though by celebrating our winners – huge congratulations to The Warriors! Enjoy your victory.
