As
we entered the final Round of games we had a whole
host of potential outcomes regarding who would
qualify for the Cup and the Plate especially with
the re-arranged fixture to come. There was still
everything to play for as the final round of games
kicked off.
On
Pitch C we had the all-Spanish contest of Palma
Bay versus Mallorca Look. Palma Bay CF were currently
in third position. With the other groups finished
they knew that a win and 9 points would be enough
to see them through as either one of the best
third placed finishers or automatically in second
if they could climb above Melee FC. In fact a
draw and therefore 7 points would be enough if
they finished third as they had a better goal
difference than McArthur's Big Macs in Group B.
However, they had to finish third and so they
would have to hope either The Funky Shepherds
or Shergold's Hairline Harriers failed to win
both their remaining games.
Mallorca
Look needed just a point to secure the Group C
title, a win to complete it in style with a 100%
record but a draw would leave them vulnerable
to Melee FC climbing above them. This would matter
– not only for pride, honour etc – but also as
winning the group should provide an easier Quarter-Final
tie.
This
would be no foregone conclusion for Mallorca Look
as Palma Bay were an improving side. They lost
their first two but now had two consecutive wins
behind them. They proved a good match for Mallorca
Look and the teams changed ends level at 1-1.
Daniel Gonzalez was on target for Palma Bay, Jose
Garcia on target for Mallorca Look.
In
the second half there was a bit of a surprise
as we got a winner – it came from Jeremias Tiemo
of Palma Bay. Mallorca Look's unbeaten record
had gone although we are sure they would be happy
with their morning's work. It was a stunning win
for Palma Bay and ensured they would qualify for
the Cup as well.
On
Pitch D, Shergold's Hairline Harriers met Melee
FC. This was game number 4 of 5 for Shergold's
Hairline Harriers and although they currently
sat on 3 points they had a chance of Cup qualification
if they could win both of their last games. They
would have their work cut out against a Melee
FC side who were second in the table.
Melee
FC had 9 points from 12 so far and a draw would
guarantee them second spot. They could still win
Group C should they pick up all 3 points here
and Mallorca Look lose their final game. The Melee
FC and Mallorca Look games were due to be played
at the same time so they did not know yet that
Mallorca Look did in fact lose their final game.
Melee FC and Mallorca Look had identical goals
for and against records so any form of win would
do it.
The
victory was never really in doubt for Melee FC.
Chris Pilsbury set them on their way before David
Stothard scored his 5th and 6th of the tournament.
Tom Clark made it 4-0 and Melee FC signed off
Group C in style – as champions. This was the
second time they had won their group in eurofootballfives.com
competition (they also did so at the 2015 Lisbon
Tournament).
For
Shergold's Hairline Harriers, hopes of the Cup
were over but they were still very much in the
hunt for a place in the Plate.
That
left us with Whangdoodles versus The Funky Shepherds.
The Whangdoodles were the only team yet to get
off the mark in Group C and this was their final
chance. If they could pick up a win they would
move on to 3 points and have some hope of qualifying
for the Plate. A defeat or a draw would mean their
elimination from the tournament.
For
The Funky Shepherds this was their penultimate
fixture and they went into it in a similar position
to Shergold's Hairline Harriers. They had a chance
of Cup qualification if they could win both of
their last games. However, after a disappointing
first half that never looked like happening.
For
a team not yet off the mark Whangdoodles put in
a stunning first half display. They raced to a
3-0 lead and effectively won the match in the
opening period. Their hopes of prolonging their
stay in the tournament had been given a massive
boost.
Whilst
The Funky Shepherds hit back in the second half
the damage had been done in the opening period
as Whangdoodles ran out 4-2 winners. The Whangdoodles
had gone from famine to feast in front of goal
with Lee Malcolm, Ben Miller, John Curran and
Gerren Allen all finding the back of the net.
For
The Funky Shepherd there was a double for Luke
Pearson – some personal satisfaction amongst team
disappointment. We now had three teams locked
on three points with two of those due to meet
in the final fixture of Group C.
After
their efforts in the Whangdoodles fixture, The
Funky Shepherds were a spent force and were unable
to continue in the tournament. They waived their
final fixture handing a 3-0 walkover win to Shergold's
Hairline Harriers.
What
this meant for the group was Shergold's Hairline
Harriers would collect the 3 points and finish
in fourth position. Whangdoodles would move up
above The Funky Shepherds on goal difference to
also qualify for the Plate. The Funky Shepherds
would be eliminated. We thank them for attending
the tournament and apologise once again for the
fixture error that effected their campaign.
