The
final game of Group B was Southgate County Vets
versus WEEDS Colts. It was a battle of the top
two at the start of the fifth and final round
of games.
Southgate
County Vets had the luxury of knowing they were
already through to the Cup. A draw or better would
see them win Group B. A win would see them do
it with a 100% record. A defeat would see them
slip to second but still qualify for the Cup.
This would also mean a potentially tougher Cup
Semi-Final draw as they would have to play the
winners of Group A.
From
a WEEDS Colts perspective they needed a win to
leapfrog above their opponents here and take the
Group B title. A draw would see them finish in
second and qualify for the Cup. A defeat would
be ok as long as Crabtree Amblers did not win
and there be a 3 goal swing in the process. WEEDS
Colts did not know this at kick-off but Crabtree
Amblers won 1-0 so WEEDS Colts could only afford
to lose by a goal.
Declan
O'Leary scored the opening goal of the game in
the opening period of the game. They were in pole
position to take the Group B win. WEEDS Colts
were now on something of a knife edge. We are
not sure if they were keeping tabs on the Crabtree
Amblers game but there position was precarious.
WEEDS
Colts were in danger of slipping to third and
into the Plate competition. When Ken Middleton
made it 2-0 to Southgate County Vets that is exactly
what happened. It was cruel on WEEDS who hadn't
conceded until this game then one defeat and they
miss out on the Cup – a really bitter pill to
swallow.
Many
congratulations to Southgate County Vets for rounding
off a fine group campaign and for topping the
table. Well done too to Crabtree Amblers for also
making it through to the Cup. WEEDS Colts and
The Warriors would also progress into the Plate
competition.
