Group
B began with one of the four Spanish debutants
taking to the field in the form of C'an Pastilla
Vets taking on Crabtree Amblers.
Crabtree
Amblers debuted at the 2016 Lisbon Veterans Tournament
and it was quite a successful one. In the group
phase they finished joint third (fourth on goal
difference) as a last match 0-0 draw prevented
them taking third place outright. They qualified
for the Plate and Semi-Final success ensued as
they beat Mavericks 1-0. They were to collect
Runners-Up medals in the presentation as they
were defeated 2-0 by Pioes in the Plate Final.
It
was Crabtree Amblers who hit the front here in
Mallorca with Ade Chester scoring their first
of the tournament. The goal afforded them a lead
at the break.
In
the second half there was a goal each for Phil
Tredinnick (Crabtree Amblers) and CC Barr (C'an
Pastilla Vets) as the English team got off to
a winning start.
Match
2 was to be Ferriolrence taking on WEEDS Colts.
Like in the game above it was supposed to be Spain
versus England. Ferriolrence were a no-show though
which was a letdown for everyone. WEEDS Colts
picked up a 3-0 walkover although I am sure they
would have much preferred to collect the points
on the pitch.
The
final teams in Group B to start their challenge
were The Warriors versus Southgate County Vets.
The
Warriors made their debut in the summer of 2015
at the Algarve Veterans Tournament. They started
off well in Group B with two 1-0 wins in their
first 3 games and ultimately finished 4th in the
table. They then defeated Ashtead Vets 1-0 in
the Plate Semi-Finals before just missing out
on the winner's trophy as Norton Old Boys emerged
victorious 1-0.
At
the 2016 Lisbon Veterans Tournament they recovered
from a 2-0 opening defeat to record 3 wins and
a draw to finish joint top of Group B (but second
on goal difference). They qualified for the Cup
competition but went out in the Semi-Finals to
the eventual champions Sago.
The
Warriors found themselves a goal down in the Mallorca
opener though thanks to a goal from Ken Middleton.
In the second period the lead was extended by
Declan O'Leary to make it 2-0. The Warriors pulled
it back to 2-1 through George Morson which is
how it finished.
