We
arrived at the Plate Quarter-Final stage and we
would shortly see eight teams reduced to four
teams. Inter Balear would meet Green Man FC. The
pre-determined draw meant the 3rd best 3rd placed
team would meet the best 6th placed team with
the former being Inter Balear. They would be favourites
going into this game.
In
a strange twist of fate the two teams had met
earlier in the day in Group B. It was Inter Balear
who emerged victorious in the previous encounter
as they ran out 4-1 victors. A repeat would do
them just fine. When you consider that Inter Balear
won the Plate here in 2015 (as Seleccion Balear)
and the Cup here just 3 weeks ago as Valecuatro,
this would add weight to their favourites tag.
Green
Man FC were also in that 2015 Mallorca Tournament
(as Stanford FC). They would have met Seleccion
Balear in the Plate Semi-Finals had they beaten
Wrexham Rednecks in the Quarter-Final but they
went down 7-3 on that occasion. This was a much
stronger Quarter-Final performance from Green
Man FC in 2017, especially given the quality of
the opposition, but it wasn't quite enough.
Inter
Balear ended up doing the double over Green Man
FC. It was 2-0 this time with goals from Antonio
Lobo Blanco and Juan Garcia Noguera.
The
second Quarter-Final saw Whiteley FC take on Southgate
County as 4th place from Group A would take on
5th Place from Group B.
Whiteley
FC would undoubtedly be favourites for this game
based upon the morning's results as they had secured
7 points compared to their opponent's 3. Southgate
County's only win had come at the very start of
the day – a very good win over Son Gual (who qualified
for the Cup) but since then results had drifted
away. They were the 2016 Lisbon Tournament Plate
winners though so if they could regain their form
they should certainly be considered challengers.
The
break at the end of the group phase seemed to
have done Southgate County some good. They stormed
out of the blocks in the first half and raced
to a 3-0 first half lead. Simon Hicks, Richard
Kempson and James Fletcher all hit the net for
the team from London.
It
really was a killer blow for Whiteley FC. A tight
second half meant to further goals and that first
half blitz from Southgate County was enough to
see them through to the next phase.
Quarter-Final
3 was due to be McArthur's Big Macs versus Whangdoodles.
McArthur's Big Macs were forced to retire due
to injuries/fatigue and so Whangdoodles had a
bye to the next round with a 3-0 walkover.
Three
Quarter-Finals down, one to go as Shergold's Hairline
Harriers would play Abertawe. Both teams were
in new territory in our tournaments – Shergold's
Hairline Harriers were on debut and so naturally
that would be their first Plate appearance. Last
time Abertawe appeared at the Mallorca Tournament
they played in the Wooden Spoon final for the
17th and 18th ranked teams. This was a step up
for them.
Shergold's
Hairline Harriers qualified for this stage as
the 4th placed team in Group C. They had 2 defeats
and 3 wins to their name. Abertawe had a record
of 1 defeat and 4 wins. The English team had scored
5 and conceded 7, the Welsh team had scored 4
and conceded 12. Comparisons are always tricky
at this stage as it does not take into account
the relevant strength of each group but based
on the numbers you'd probably say Shergold's Hairline
Harriers were favourites.
If
they were then they lived up to their billing.
Andy May scored the opening goal of the game and
from there they never looked back. 1-0 became
2-0 which became 3-0 and then finally, 4-0. Andy
May actually went on to score a hat-trick as Shergold's
Hairline Harriers booked their place in the Semi-Final.
