Round
3 started with saw Spain's Palma Bay CF taking
on England's Whangdoodles. Both teams were on
debut and, at the start of the day, had a blank
canvas on which to paint their footballing artistry.
How had they done?
Well,
both had taken a little time adjusting to life
in eurofootballfives.com competition as they occupied
5th and 6th spot in the table. Both teams were
looking for their first goals and first points
of the day. It would be fair to say that the teams
had not been outclassed though with goal difference
of 0-3 and 0-4 showing they had been reasonably
competitive. This was an ideal opportunity to
claim a victory and push on up the table.
With
the match under starters orders it was Palma Bay
who made the initial breakthrough. The goal was
credited to Miguel Gonzalez Barbe and it proved
to be a crucial strike. Palma Bay CF held onto
the lead until half-time and then until full-time.
They took all 3 points with the 1-0 win – could
this be the turning point for them?
It
was another narrow loss for the Whangdoodles whose
wait to get off the mark would have to wait a
little longer.
Due
to a fixture mix-up we had a postponement of The
Funky Shepherds versus Shergold's Hairline Harriers
game. Pitch B was running 7-8 minutes late and
so The Funky Shepherds turned up for their 11.30
game and Whiteley FC turned up for their 11.45
game. The referee said he had showed the fixture
card to the teams and all was good so they kicked
off. The mix-up was only noticed at the end of
the game and so all The Funky Shepherd's good
work in securing a 2-0 win (both goals to Luke
Pearson) was to no avail. They'd effectively played
a friendly. We can only apologise for the error.
The
match versus Shergold's Hairline Harriers would
be postponed until the end of the group.
At
the start of the day, Melee FC versus Mallorca
Look was one of the stand out fixtures due to
their past records. Their records today were impeccable
with both teams boasting a 100% record of 6 points
from 6 games.
We
mentioned Melee FC's overall group record in Round
2 and it is hugely impressive, They had a win
ratio of 63% at the start of the day that had
now risen to 67%. Mallorca Look's record is stellar
– 80% at the start of the day, now 85%. We have
to point out that this is from a smaller sample
size of 7 games compared to 21 for Melee FC.
As
we expected with two evenly matched teams this
was a close contest and the two teams went into
the break level at 0-0. In the second half Mallorca
Look edged it by the odd goal in three. Goalkeeper
Jose Miguel Vera and Antonio Torres were on target
for Mallorca Look – the first goals that Melee
FC had conceded. David Stothard scored the goal
for Melee FC – his second in as many games.
Mallorca
Look opened up a 3 point lead at the top but Melee
FC were still well placed in second position.
