Son
Gual and Green Man FC kicked off Round 4. At the
start of Round 4 there were three teams all level
on three points – all with a chance of qualifying
for the Cup, all with a chance of elimination
and all most likely to reach the Plate competition.
Son
Gual's qualifying record from the group phase
saw them qualify for the Plate in their first
4 tournaments (including going on to win the Plate
at the 2013 Mallorca Fives). In their most recent
tournament (2015) they had qualified for the Cup.
If they wanted to reach the Cup again they really
needed to win both their last games.
A
quick check of the history books shows both these
teams competed at the 2015 Mallorca Tournament
but they avoided each other on that occasion.
Green Man FC came into the game on the back of
a first win in the Balearics. Could they make
it 2 out of 2?
If
they were to do so then they would need to do
so from behind as Son Gual were the pacesetters
in this fixture. Son Gual were sharing the goals
around and this time it was Sebas who gave them
the lead. Ryan scored his third of the tournament
to give the locally based team a 2-0 cushion.
In
the second half Green Man FC were unable to make
any dents in Son Gual's lead as the sands of time
ran out with Son Gual still two goals to the good.
The Spanish moved up to third, Green Man FC remained
in fifth.
Next
up was Inter Balear versus Southgate County –
both teams previous winners of one of our Plate
competitions. Inter Balear (as Seleccion Balear)
here in 2015 and Southgate County last year at
the 2016 Lisbon Tournament. The teams found themselves
in 4th and 6th respectively at the start of the
round. Both teams certainly had work to do.
We
often say momentum is a big thing in these tournaments
– if it is with you results blossom, if it is
against you it can be tough to get things back
on track. Southgate County had the momentum against
them. They won the first game but two subsequent
defeats had left them in trouble. Inter Balear
were in a worse situation in the table but had
just come from behind to collect their first point
– could they kick on?
Sadly
for Southgate County, the real Inter Balear showed
up in this game. They had begun so slowly in their
first 3 games with just 1 point to show for their
efforts but they now showed the form that made
them champions at the recent Mallorca Fives. It
seemed that Southgate County had inadvertently
poked the hornet's nest.
Inter
Balear romped to a 6-1 win. The first goal was
uncredited by the referee – possibly referred
to the dubious goals panel. From then on Manuel
Pardo Exposito scored a hat-trick and each of
Antonio Lobo Blanco and Juan Garcia Noguera added
to their tally. Southgate County had a consolation
through Simon Hicks.
The
final game of Round 4 and game 12 of Group B was
the big one as the top two met. It was Wilmslow
Whoppers versus McArthur's Big Macs. A great advert
for fast food at a sporting competition.
Wilmslow
Whoppers had been imperious so far with 3 wins
from 3 games. They had scored 8 goals and the
1 conceded was the only blemish on an otherwise
perfect performance so far. The league table suggested
this would be their most difficult challenge to
date.
McArthur's
Big Macs had matched them blow for blow in the
first two rounds and looked on course for doing
so in Round 3 before they found themselves drawing
having been in a winning position. McArthur's
Big Macs could climb above their opponents with
a win.
Wilmslow
Whoppers moved through the gears and swatted their
opponents aside. The Wilmslow boys raced into
a 3-0 lead. Peter Boyle got them off and running
before Jamie Frost (2) put them in a commanding
position at the turnaround. In the second period
it was Laurence Taylor (2) that did the damage.
Alex McArthur's fourth of the tournament gave
the Big Macs something to cheer but it was a mere
consolation.
Final
score, Whoppers 5, Big Macs 1. Ronald will not
be happy!
