Round
2 started with The Funky Shepherds versus Palma
Bay CF. Both teams had lost their opening fixtures
but there was certainly no shame as both played
high quality opposition in the form of Mallorca
Look and Melee FC.
The
Funky Shepherds made their eurofootballfives.com
debut at the 2016 Algarve Open. This was a very
high quality tournament and they were drawn with
the 2014 Mallorca Tournament Winners (Cheesecake
FC) and 2015 Algarve Open Veterans Tournament
Winners (Mini FC). They finished 4th in their
group that included a 2-0 win over Water Boy (2014
Cup Final, 2011, 2012 & 2015 Cup Semi-Final,
2013 Plate Winners). They progressed to the Plate
group where they finished 5th.
They
had a tough start here too versus Mallorca Look
but they put in a battling performance although
a slow start (always a risk for the travelling
team after a night out in Mallorca) saw them behind
early. Here in Round 2, they were much tighter
from the start and the two teams went into half-time
level at 0-0.
The
Funky Shepherds then hit the front in the second
half with Karl Haggan's goal setting them on their
way. A Greg Sanderson wonder strike gave The Funky
Shepherds the luxury of a two goal lead. Darrell
Milman was as safe as houses in goal as he kept
a clean sheet. The Funky Shepherds had their first
win of the day.
Whangdoodles
were up next as they took on Melee FC. We had
one team with an opening game victory (Melee FC)
playing another with an opening game defeat (Whangdoodles).
A rather simplistic interpretation would see you
plump for a Melee FC win. When you looked at Melee
FC's track record in our group phases it would
add weight to your prediction.
In
their previous 4 tournaments, Melee FC had qualified
for the Cup competition on each and every occasion.
Before today, their group record read played 19,
won 12, drawn 3, lost 4 with 43 goals scored and
14 conceded as they amassed 39 points along the
way.
A
1-0 win against Palma Bay CF boosted those stats
in Round 1 and they were set to further boost
those credentials with a win in Round 2 against
the Whangdoodles. Tom Clark scored in the opening
period to give Melee FC the advantage before second
half strikes from David Stothard and Jack Dell
ensured it was 6 points from 6.
Fabio
Zucchelli had kept his second successive clean
sheet of the day as Melee FC looked well set.
For Whangdoodles it was a tough baptism of fire
in our tournaments but time was still on their
side to make a mark in this tournament.
To
complete Round 2 we had Shergold's Hairline Harriers
versus Mallorca Look – we had two first game victors
coming head to head. The winner of this fixture
would join Melee FC at the top of Group C. A draw
would leave them sharing second position.
Mallorca
Look had played here 12 months ago and been impressive
in the group phase. They won their first 3 games
at a canter (6-2, 7-1 and 7-1) before a 3-2 defeat
to eventual champions Mariano FC. They then finished
the group phase in style with a 3-0 win over Old
Sedcopians to finish second and qualify for the
Cup. They drew 2-2 in the Cup Quarter-Finals but
went out on penalties.
Here
in 2017 they started off with a more modest 2-1
win over The Funky Shepherds and were finding
it tough going against Shergold's Hairline Harriers.
The two teams looked fairly evenly matched. When
the half-time whistle blew there was nothing between
the two teams, 0-0
In
the second half a solitary strike would decide
the destination of the points. Cometh the hour,
cometh the man and that man was Carlos Prieto
Real. His goal meant it was 2 wins out of 2 for
Mallorca Look.
Shergold's
Hairline Harriers slipped to 4th position.
