Game
7 of Group B was an important fixture for both
WEEDS Colts and The Warriors. This was to be the
mid-way game of the group campaign and could go
a long way in determining their fate.
This
was a repeat fixture from the 2016 Lisbon Veterans
Tournament when the two teams met in Round 4 of
Group B. Back then, the two teams reached half-time
level at 0-0. Defensively WEEDS were sound but
they were struggling for goals at the other end.
Although earlier in the event this was also true
of WEEDS today who were yet to concede.
In
the second half in Lisbon it was The Warriors
who forged ahead when James Newton struck. It
was a goal that would earn his team all 3 points
and propel them to third place in the table and
ultimately qualify for the Cup. A repeat would
do them just nicely!
If
they were to do it they would need to do it without
James Newton who was not on tour this year. Just
like last year the two teams made it to half-time
level at 0-0. Just like last year there would
be a solitary second half goal to decide the tie.
Unlike last year though the crucial strike would
come from a WEEDS player as the Colts' Ian Holmes
scored for the second game in a row to earn his
team a 1-0 win.
It
kept WEEDS Colts 100% record going and they lead
Group B with a maximum 9 points.
Southgate
County Vets made their first appearance at the
2016 Lisbon Veterans Tournament and found it tough
going as they lost their opening four games before
finishing with a goal-less draw against Crabtree
Amblers. Could they reach the knock-out stages
in Mallorca this year?
C'an
Pastilla Vets versus Southgate County Vets was
the next game on Pitch C and was a battle between
the 5 th and 2nd placed teams. A win for Southgate
County Vets would see them go joint top with WEEDS
Colts and seemingly turn Group B into a two-horse
race. A win by 4-goals or more would see them
lead the way on goal difference.
Southgate
County Vets' form here in Mallorca could not have
been more different as they were flying. The same
could not be said for C'an Pastilla Vets who were
struggling with 2 defeats in a row. The game went
with the form book as Southgate County Vets ran
out 2-0 winners.
Jason
Pugh and Matt Crighton scored the goals that sent
them joint top of Group B but second on goal difference.
To
complete Round 3 of Group B we awarded the 3-0
walkover win to Crabtree Amblers over Ferriolrence.
The 3 points moved them on to 6 and just 3 points
behind the leading two.
