After 58 games of football we came down to the most important of them all. Game 59 – The 2017 Mallorca Tournament Cup Final.

The two teams set to do battle for the honour and glory of victory were Wilmslow Whoppers (England) versus Son Gual (Spain). Wilmslow Whoppers were bidding to become the third English winner of this tournament and the first since Cheesecake FC's win in 2014. If Son Gual were to become successful they would become the fourth Spanish winners and mean it was 2 years in a row of Spanish success after Mariano FC's win 12 months ago.

Wilmslow Whoppers were massively impressive on debut and would be the favourites going into the game. They had stormed into the Final with 7 wins on the bounce, 28 goals and only six goals conceded in the whole tournament. They were the top-scoring team in the tournament, had the best goal difference in the tournament and boasted the tournament's current top scorer. It would take some performance to stop them lifting the trophy in the presentation.

Son Gual were not out of it though and the Mallorca Tournament had been a breakthrough event for many teams. In 2013, L'Albiceleste/Grant Thornton picked up their first win. Cheesecake FC won one of our tournaments at the sixth attempt in 2014. In 2015, Ireland's Saipan FC also won their first eurofootballfives.com at the sixth attempt. Earlier in this report we thought it could be Melee FC to break their duck in 2017. Son Gual defeated them in the Quarter-Finals and it was the Spanish who had a chance to make their breakthrough win – spookily, this was their sixth appearance at a eurofootballfives.com tournament.

These two teams had met earlier in the day – in Group B, Round 3. On that occasion it was Wilmslow Whoppers who won 1-0. That was the narrowest margin of victory they had won by today. Could Son Gual get even closer in this Cup Final? Well, it was a pretty good first half performance as they held the Whoppers at arm's length to a certain degree.

Could Wilmslow Whoppers find the breakthrough? They were the better team I think it is fair to say on the pitch so the last thing they would want was for this to go penalties especially as Son Gual had already won one shoot-out today. For Son Gual, maybe this represented the best possible route to glory.

If Son Gual were to earn a shoot-out they would need to score though as Peter Boyle broke the deadlock in the latter period of the first half. He capitalized on a mistake in the Son Gual defence to sweep home for 1-0. With Wilmslow Whoppers a goal up it was always going to be difficult to Son Gual. If they pushed forward they were going to be exposed to the counter. One such counter was finished off by Jamie Frost – it was a goal that was the icing on the cake for him and his team. For him it was his 15 th goal of the tournament and he would win the Golden Boot award. For his team, it sealed the tournament victory.

We offer our consolations to Son Gual who were absolutely superb and put in a career best performance at the 2017 tournament. They would have to settle up for Runners-Up medals in the presentation.

Our congratulations go to Wilmslow Whoppers – worthy 2017 Mallorca Tournament Champions! With youth on their side it could be the first of many.

Thank you to all the teams who competed. We hope to see you all again at a tournament very soon.
