It
was 4th placed Whiteley FC against 1st placed
Lilchicago in the final fixture of Round 3.
Whiteley
FC were making their 8 th appearance in European
action with eurofootballfives and their 4 th at
our Mallorca Tournament. The journey began at
the 2008 Amsterdam Fives where they reached the
Cup Semi-Finals and lost an 8-goal thriller, 5-3.
In 2010, they played at the 2010 Algarve Open
winning Group D before going out in the quarter-finals
to Portuguese team Water Boy. 2011 saw a visit
to the inaugural Budapest Fives with one team
narrowly losing on penalties to eventual winners
Al Kaloida (Hungary) in the Plate Quarter-Finals
and their other team winning the 4-team Wooden
Spoon convincingly in the final 6-1 against Sweden's
A Magyar Pekseg.
2012
saw the start of a Mallorca Tournament trilogy.
That year, Whiteley Stags went furthest of their
two squads reaching the Plate Semi-Finals. In
2013, their two teams finished 5th and 6th in
the group phase and both exited at the Plate Quarter-Finals
stage. In 2014 they began the day with a 2-1 win
before results tailed off and they went through
to the Wooden Spoon Semi-Finals. A 2-1 loss to
Taylor's Tits ended their day on the field. 2015
saw a second visit to the Algarve Open. A slow
start saw them lose their first 3 games. They
also lost their last 2 but with much improved
performances – narrow 1-0 defeats to Dep Legends
(Ire) and RC Lens (Eng). The latter was particularly
impressive as RC Lens went all the way to the
Cup Final and one of their players has since gone
on to play for Wycombe Wanderers!
So
far today, Whiteley FC had a 2-0 win and 1-0 defeat
on their CV. They held their own against the league-leaders
for the first half and the two teams reached the
break at 0-0.
In
the end the top of the table side had just enough
to take all 3 points. A goal from Mantas Garsvinskas
was the only thing that separated the teams. The
Lithuanian team remained joint-top but slipped
to second on goal difference. Whiteley FC remained
in fourth position.
