Brewin Dolphin (Eng)

The first final of the day would see AAK S&S versus Brewin Dolphin. With nine games of football already under their belt the two teams would need to summon one last burst of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners medals in the presentation.

AAK S&S had not experienced much joy in our Plate competitions before. They had suffered two Quarter-Final exits before with a 5-0 defeat to Rigford Seahawks Omega at the 2011 Amsterdam Fives and a 5-3 defeat to St Paul's College Old Boys in Amsterdam in 2014. Here in Lisbon they had enjoyed much more success with 4 wins and 1 draw (converted to a win via penalties). Their games had been full of goals with 15 for and 16 against.

For Brewin Dolphin it was a first @eurofootball5 final at only the first attempt. They started the day superbly with 3 wins out of 4 before a run of 3 defeats threatened to derail their efforts. The Plate saw them rejuvenated as they picked up a Quarter-Final win and came from behind to see off FC Seagrave on penalties in the Semi-Final. They had 11 goals for and 10 against today.

At kick-off this looked like it could be a very even game – both had 4 wins, both had a draw, both won their Semi-Finals on penalties. However, the game was rather more one sided than we had expected. It looked like AAK S&S had more left in the tank. When they forged ahead in the first half it seemed to knock the stuffing out of Brewin Dolphin.

Gary Bartley started the scoring before Richard Clubley added a double. The goal-scoring baton was returned to Gary Bartley who added another couple to make it 5-0 and complete a hat-trick. There's not many people who can boast a hat-trick in a European final but Gary Bartley now could. He could also boast a tournament top goalscorer trophy as his 11 goals on the day marked him out as the leading marksman in the 2017 Lisbon Tournament so very well done to him.

We'd like to offer our commiserations to Brewin Dolphin for just missing out on glory as the Plate Final proved to be a game too far. The rumour mill suggests they may join us in Amsterdam next year and we sincerely hope they do.

For today though, the plaudits all go to one team in the Plate competition. It was a good day's work for AAK S&S and a much deserved win - the 2017 Lisbon Tournament Plate Winners, Many congratulations on your victory.
