We
were now past the halfway point in Group A as
we entered Round 5. We had 8th versus 6th on Pitch
A as Retainers Academy entertained PMPCAR. Retainers
Academy were currently 6 points away from the
Cup qualification places with 9 points to play
for so it looked a tall order for them to progress.
For PMPCAR the Cup was in easier reach as they
sat just 2 points off the current team in 4th.
The Portuguese could move up into fourth position
with a win here.
Retainers
Academy were yet to put a point on the board so
far but in their previous game against Portuguese
opposition they fared pretty well. Against Indoorsoccer
it was a narrow 1-0 defeat – a respectable score
against a team who had won 4 from 4.
They
were to find themselves trailing to Portuguese
opposition again when PMPCAR moved ahead through
Pedro Domingos. There was to be joy for Retainers
Academy though as Alex Vacher equalized to open
his team's account for the day and peg their opposition
back to 1-1.
For
much of this game it then looked like Retainers
Academy would earn their first point or possibly
win it as they had a couple of decent efforts
on goal. However, PMPCAR were pushing for the
victory and their extra possession/territory told
as they produced a winner in the latter stages.
Pedro Domingos was the man on target again.
It
was tough on Retainers Academy but PMPCAR would
not care as they moved up to fourth place – although
their rivals did have a game in hand on them.
Barrymoore's
Swimming Club had started the day off well with
4 wins out of 4. So far through this report we
have drawn parallels with their Barcelona Fives
campaign last year which was equally impressive.
At this stage, Barrymoore's Swimming Club would
probably want the parallels to end as they only
picked up 1 point from 9 at the end of their Group
D campaign in Barca.
A
win here for Barrymoore's would mark their best
ever start to one of our tournaments but also
open up a 3 point lead on Indoorsoccer and put
the pressure on their Portuguese opponents. Barrymoore's
opponents were Cruz Del Sur B who were down in
7 th position. This looked like a home win for
the Pools coupon.
The
game went with the form book and Barrymoore's
Swimming Club never looked in any danger of not
picking up another three points. Bobby Troulis
scored his third of the tournament to set them
on their way. A Richie Murphy double helped open
up a 3-0 lead before Cruz Del Sur B's fate was
sealed as Jason James made it 4-0.
Indoorsoccer
had just witnessed Barrymoore's Swimming Club
retain their 100% record by going 5 wins out of
5. Indoorsoccer had the opportunity to match them
if they could take their 5th win of the tournament.
In their way stood ADP Netherlands and it would
not be an easy task against the Dutch.
ADP
Netherlands were experiencing an upsurge in form.
Having lost their first 2 games they had responded
with 2 wins and carried some momentum into this
fixture. It was the Portuguese who broke the deadlock
though as Bruno Sousa scored his second of the
tournament.
At
this stage everything looked good for Indoorsoccer
but it was not to last. Remco Nijland had scored
in each of the last two games and he was to make
it three games in a row. His goal made it 1-1
as the Dutch were back on level terms.
When
the final whistle blew the teams were still level
at 1-1 and had to settle for a point each. Only
time would tell if this was 1 point gained or
2 points dropped.
Game
20 of Group A was Brewin Dolphin versus Leave
It FC. With Indoorsoccer being held to a draw
in the previous fixture, Brewin Dolphin had the
chance to close the gap on the Portuguese team
in second place to just 1 point with a win. A
win would also take them to within 3 points of
the summit.
Leave
It FC had been competitive throughout the day
as their level goal difference (5 goals scored,
5 goals against) would testify. A return of 4
points from 12 was probably a bit harsh on them
and they had arguably deserved more for their
efforts to date.
It
was Brewin Dolphin who made the initial breakthrough
in this one and it was a sensational strike. Jason
Ryan stepped up to hit a bullet free-kick to put
his side 1-0 up. In the “live” league table Brewin
Dolphin were up to 12 points with a 5 point gap
to those behind. If it stayed this way it certainly
looked like a 3 horse race for the Group A title.
Leave
It FC had other ideas though. Rotimi Ibironke
scored a hat-trick in the opening fixture and
he was to add to his tally here. First of all
he bagged an equalizer and then he scored a late
winner. It was a stunning comeback from Leave
It FC which pulled Brewin Dolphin back into the
chasing pack. It hauled Leave It FC up to a 4-team
share of 4th place.
