20
games down and 8 to go in Group A – the results
and points on offer were becoming increasingly
crucial as we progressed through the rounds. To
kick us off in Round 6 we had Cruz Del Sur B versus
Retainers Academy.
Both
teams were yet to get off the mark in terms of
points and occupied 7th and 8th place. These teams
found themselves 7 points off 6th position so
knew they would be playing in the Plate competition
this afternoon. They also knew that this game
was effectively a knock-out tie in terms of avoiding
finishing bottom. As well as playing or pride
a win here would help secure an easier Plate Quarter-Final
tie. We've seen teams struggle in the groups before
and then go on to win the Plate so a positive
result here could re-ignite the winner's challenge.
The
two teams had remarkably similar records so far
if you looked at the league table:
Cruz
Del Sur B: 5 0-0-5 2-12 0
Retainers
Academy: 5 0-0-5 1-12 0
Cruz
Del Sur B had scored one more goal which is why
they sat above their opponents in the table so
should this game finish in a draw it would favour
them.
The
game would not end in a draw though. The teams
were evenly matched as their record suggested.
Just the one goal would be required to win it
and that goal came from Alex Demi. There was a
clean sheet to boot and Retainers Academy had
their first points on the board – 3 of them in
fact.
The
next game was also one between two teams with
near identical records on the field of play. There
were three teams level in joint fourth position
and we had two of them in action here. 6th place
ADP Netherlands played host to 5th placed PMPCAR.
Only goal difference separated the teams with
the former on -3 and the latter on -1.
It
was ADP Netherlands who came into the game with
the greater form. They had secured 7 points from
a possible 9 including ending Indoorsoccer's 100%
record last time out. Over the same period PMPCAR
had picked up just the 4 points.
It
was ADP Netherlands who continued their form as
they picked up a 1-0 win. It was a second clean
sheet for Pieter Werff in three games as they
tightened up their defence. At the other end the
match-winner was Tim van der Kolk. It was van
der Kolk's first goal of the tournament as it
gave them all 3 points and saw them rocket from
6th to 3rd.
Next
on Pitch A, or Campo A as the locals would have
it, we had Leave It FC versus Barrymoore's Swimming
Club. Leave It FC had just secured a morale-boosting
win over Brewin Dolphin that put them in fourth
place. ADP Netherlands win had just seen them
slip to fifth so they needed another 3 points.
Their form today read WLDLW.
In
comparison, Barrymoore's Swimming Club's form
was exceptional. It read WWWWW. Not only that
but they had scored 14 goals without reply so
far. They had scored 6 more than their nearest
rivals and were also solid at the back – the dream
ticket! As a result they would obviously be much
fancied for this one.
It
was normal service resumed for Barrymoore's Swimming
Club as they scored twice through Jason James
and Sari Itani. It was clean sheet #6 at the back
for the defence. Could anyone stop Barrymoore's
Swimming Club? It didn't look like it at the moment.
They now lead by 5 points and could be Group A
champions with a game to spare if Indoorsoccer
failed to win their next game.
The
final game of Round 6 was a big one. It was Brewin
Dolphin (Eng) versus Indoorsoccer (Por). The Portuguese
team were currently 5 points behind Barrymoore's
Swimming Club with a possible 6 points on offer
– this game and their final game where they would
meet Barrymoore's in a potential title decider.
If the Portuguese failed to win then second position
was the best they could manage.
From
a Brewin Dolphin perspective, they could secure
a place in the Cup should they be able to claim
all 3 points. Anything less for them and they
would be in a dog-fight going in the final round
of fixtures.
Both
teams may have come into the game a little flat
– Indoorsoccer had just lost their 100% record
and Brewin Dolphin came into the game on the back
of defeat. In such circumstances the first goal
is often critical to give the leaders a boost.
The
first goal in this one went to Bruno Sousa with
his third strike of the tournament. Pedro Mendes
scored his second of the day to make it 2-0 before
Alexandre Ribeiro also scored his second of the
day to make it 3-0. It was an emphatic response
from the Portuguese after that draw in the previous
game and the perfect preparation for their title
showdown in Round 7.
For
Brewin Dolphin, having been in the top 3 and Cup
qualification places all day, they saw themselves
slip to fourth position at just the wrong time
with their Cup hopes suddenly in jeopardy.
