We
were reaching the climax of Group B and with 5
games each already under their belts, the teams
now had just 2 games left to stake their claim
for the knock-out phase of the tournament. We
had an absolute belter of a game in store at the
start of Round 6 as Pangare Futebol Clube met
AAK S&S.
This
promised to be an epic battle – Pangare Futebol
Clube had a maximum 12 points from their first
4 games but had just lost. It was a convincing
3-0 defeat too. Could they respond or had that
defeat done them some damage? AAK S&S were
not far behind on 9 points and came into the game
with renewed vigour having won their last two
games. A win for The Spice Boys here would mean
the Group B title was in touching distance. A
win for AAK S&S would put them level with
their opponents and really open things up with
three teams at the top plus a chance for two others
to join them.
Interestingly,
Pangare Futebol Club had lost 3-0 to Cruz Del
Sur A. AAK S&S had beaten Cruz Del Sur A 2-0
so that means AAK S&S should win this 5-0
right? We obviously know football doesn't work
like that but it does show how you could take
nothing for granted in Group B.
We
expected a close game but it ended up a little
one-sided – certainly in terms of the final score.
Celio Silva's second strike of the tournament
put Pangare 1-0 up. Victor Spaghol was one of
the main contenders for the top goalscorer award
as he scored his seventh of the day to make it
2-0 before Blendow Esteves added to his tally
for 3-0. 3-0 became 4-0 (Wedny Anouso) and then
5-0 (William Junior) as Pangare Futebol Club responded
to their last game defeat in style.
The
teams in 4th and 6th position were up next with
Cruz Del Sur A versus Lun-don FC. The battle at
the top was so tight and meant Cruz Del Sur A
needed to win their final two games to have a
good chance of making the Cup and even that might
not be enough depending on other results. For
Lun-don FC the Cup looked a jump too far but they
could still finish high up in the Plate qualification
places to maximize their chances in the knockout
phase.
Both
teams came into the game in high spirits. Lun-don
FC were on their best run with 4 points from 6
in the last two games. Cruz Del Sur A had just
comprehensively beaten the team at the top of
Group B, Pangare Futebol Clube, 3-0.
This
game would be one for the goalkeepers and the
defenders to take credit from. It was a second
clean sheet of the day for Lun-don FC's Arti Manhoran
and a third clean sheet of the day for David Coleman
for Cruz Del Sur A. We had only seen two 0-0 draws
today (so far) and Lun-don FC had been involved
in both of them.
It
was difficult to tell at this stage if the draw
was a point gained or two points dropped – only
time would tell.
The
battle at the top of Group B saw was put on hold
temporarily as we looked at the teams in sixth
and eighth in the table. It was FC Seagrave versus
Tommie's Guns.
Mathematically
it was still possible for FC Seagrave to move
up to fourth and get into the Cup but they would
have to win both their final games and hope a
whole host of other results would go their way.
Realistically, they would just have to win to
get a run of form going and then challenge for
the Plate.
For
Tommie's Guns it seemed that eighth would be inevitable
given 4 defeats in 5 games and their last 3 defeats
had been 6-0, 6-0 and 5-0. It would be tough to
recover psychologically and physically from that.
FC
Seagrave took full advantage and managed to notch
their second win of the day. Matt Allard got the
initial breakthrough before Paul Wilson doubled
the lead. Matt Allard ran in a third to take him
to four for the day. The league table looked a
lot better for them at the end of Round 6.
The
last game before the final round of fixtures was
to be Jackson's 5 versus Wonderleague. At kick-off
Wonderleague sat in second position knowing a
win would see them join Pangare Futebol Clube
at the top of the table. They also knew a point
would guarantee their qualification to the Cup.
Jackson's
5 sat three points behind their opponents and
a defeat here would give them some work to do
goinginto Round 7. A draw would most likely put
them in a three team tussle with AAK S&S and
Cruz Del Sur A for the final two Cup places. A
win would mean they just needed a draw going into
the final fixtures.
The
game was very close between two well matched teams.
Jackson's 5 could really do with a goal and when
they needed a goal-scorer it was George Gaydon
who responded “I'll Be There” as he found
the back of the net to win it for the English
team.
The
goal won the game for Jackson's 5 and must have
left Wonderleague in a “ State of Shock”.
The
two teams finished the game level on 12 points
each and both teams had their fate in their own
hands going into Round 7.
