As
the 2017 Lisbon Tournament Cup Quarter-Finals
were about to get underway we were down to the
elite 8 teams in the tournament. We had four nationalities
in with a chance of glory – Brazil (1), England
(4), The Netherlands (1) and Portugal (3) were
all gunning for tournament success.
We
started on Pitch A with Barrymoore's Swimming
Club versus Cruz Del Sur A. Barrymoore's Swimming
Club had enjoyed a terrific morning and were the
top ranked side from the group phase with the
most points (19) secured as they won Group A.
They were the second top scorers, 1 of just 2
unbeaten teams, had the joint best goal difference,
had the most clean sheets and the best defence
in the tournament. So good was their defence that
they were yet to concede in today's tournament.
This
looked a formidable task for Cruz Del Sur A on
paper but they had done pretty well themselves.
Their form had been a little bit up and down though
– they started with 2 wins, suffered 2 surprising
defeats, beat the Group B winners convincingly,
picked up a draw in a game you expected them to
win and then lost the final game to the group
runners-up.
It
was Cruz Del Sur A who struck first and they struck
early as Danny Armando McGee claimed a very important
goal. They now had something to hold on to. Barrymoore's
Swimming Club came forward and through everything
at Cruz Del Sur A. Barrymoore's Swimming Club
had scored at an average of more than 2 per game
but were thwarted by the Cruz Del Sur A defence.
It was a big performance from David Coleman who
kept his fourth clean sheet of the day for his
team and no doubt the most important yet. What
a win for Cruz Del Sur A, 1-0.
It
seemed unfair to say goodbye to Barrymoore's Swimming
Club after 7 games without conceding, the first
goal they conceded meant they were out. It was
a particularly cruel and harsh exit but that is
football I guess.
