We were down to our final 4 teams in the Plate competition. The first Semi-Final would see FC Shark versus Red Cow Belgrade. FC Shark were hunting down a second successive Plate victory – on 7 previous occasions a team who had won the Plate one year then went all the way to victory on their next appearance.

Red Cow Belgrade's story in the knockout phase could be titled “Close But No Cigar”. They reached three successive finals between 2014 and 2016 from Barcelona to Lisbon to Riga. Sadly for them, they were runners-up on each occasion. Could 2018 be the year they make the breakthrough? Could Gdansk be the destination where it all comes together?

FC Shark had the better record in the group phase with 8 points compared with Red Cow Belgrade's 6. They also had the better goal difference (+4, -1) but both teams came through a close Quarter-Final, both 2-1.

This looked to be a game that would be won or lost via fine margins and so it proved. In the end, just the one goal would decide it. Who could claim it? Cometh the hour, cometh the man and that man was Lewis Hubbard. His third goal of the day would send FC Shark through.

The second Semi-Final was Deportivo Dooradoyle versus Freshers FC. Who could join FC Shark in the Plate Final?

This was the Deportivo Dooradoyle stable's seventh Semi-Final in our tournaments. Their record so far read:

2011 Amsterdam Fives Plate: Deportivo Dooradoyle won 3-1 v CEPL (Hol)

2013 Barcelona Fives Trophy: Deportivo Dooradoyle won 1-0 v Team Also Ran (Ire)

2013 Barcelona Fives Plate: Depo Allstars won 2-0 v Shahs of Sunset (Eng)

2014 Berlin Fives Plate: Deportivo Dooradoyle won 4-1 v All of Ronan's Men (Ire)

2015 Barcelona Fives Plate: Depo Legends lost 1-0 to Hardly Athletic (Eng)

2015 Barcelona Fives Cup: Alabama Hotpockets drew 1-1 Elcombe Old Boys (Eng). Won 3-2 pens.

It is incredible to think of the previous six they had only failed to reach the final once. Could Freshers FC stop them in their tracks?

The teams were no strangers. At that 2015 Barcelona Fives, Alabama Hotpockets knocked out Freshers FC in the Cup QF. Kevin Shine played in that game and was now in the Deportivo Dooradoyle line-up today. Not only did he play in that game but he scored.

Freshers FC would gain their revenge today as they reached the Plate Final in style. Joe Trigg bagged a hat-trick in the Quarter-Final and he scored another one here. Alex Zammitt and Ben Davison were also on target for the English team. Neil Timothy and Keith Lynch goals couldn't prevent the Irish side going out.

Freshers FC always held the advantage from the moment they went ahead. They stretched their lead to 3-0 before Deportivo Dooradoyle pulled one back. 3-1 became 5-1 before Keith Lynch's goal drew a close to the scoring. Final score, 5-2.
