Group B was due to begin with The Crazy Gang versus Bede FC. However, we had a false start. The Crazy Gang were living up to their name and running late due to a man AWOL / missing in action from Friday night. The story had a happy ending as he turned up safely. It meant we would postpone the gave versus Bede FC until the end of Group B.

It meant we would start off with Lilchicago versus RAF Fylingdales instead. The two teams took to the field with Lilchicago strong favourites. They have finished in the Cup QF, Runners-Up and CUP SF in our tournaments with 2 of those 3 exits coming via penalties. What odds were they to get their first tournament win here in Gdansk?

RAF Fylingdales in contrast had 2 qualifications for the Plate and 1 for the Trophy in their previous appearance. They started as underdogs but certainly were not overwhelmed. They competed well but the English team were unable to avoid defeat.

Lilchicago, representing Lithuania, got off to a winning start thanks to goals from Aurimas Marcinkevicius and Danas Kulisauskas. Final score, 2-0.

Match 2 saw Fail Madrid (Eng) versus FC Maroon (Mor). Both teams were regulars in our tournaments and by appearing today they had a combined experience of 10 tournament appearances.

They were yet to face each other in direct competition but both teams did appear at the 2016 Riga Tournament. On that occasion it was Fail Madrid who progressed further in one sense as they reached the Plate QF before going out on pens. FC Maroon qualified for the Trophy that day and, in another sense, went further as they reached the final but finished runners-up. Penalties were the Achilles heel for both in Riga.

Although they didn't meet directly in Riga, Fail Madrid played FC Maroon's sister squad (FC Shark) in the group phase and drew 1-1. Here in Gdansk it was FC Maroon who drew first blood as Max Hill opened the scoring. James Smith added a second to seal the points as FC Maroon got off to the perfect start.

Due to the fixture re-arrangements it was RAF Fylingdales to appear on pitch again for the second time in Round 1. They would play against The Crazy Gang who had now arrived and ready to kick-off their campaign.

As with Fail Madrid and FC Maroon, these were two teams who played at the 2016 Riga Tournament but who did not meet each other in direct competition. RAF Fylingdales were drawn in Group D and finished in 4th of 6 teams thanks to 1 win, 2 draws and a 0 goal difference. The Crazy Gang finished 6 th in Group B with a -25 goal difference. History favoured RAF Fylingdales and especially after a solid (yet fruitless) performance in the opening game of the group.

Things started off well for RAF Fylingdales as they opened the scoring through Arron Gent. The Crazy Gang then put a fly in the ointment as Phil Lockwood-Taylor levelled the game up at 1-1. RAF Fylingdales would go on to claim their first three points though as Leigh Webb's goal proved the decisive strike.
