We were down to our final 4 teams in the Plate competition. The first Semi-Final would see AFC Shooters 2 versus ACE & The Swagmen.

AFC Shooters 2 would consider themselves quite unlucky to miss out on the Cup having been unbeaten for 4 games and top/joint top at the end of Rounds 3 & 4 only to miss out with a final game defeat. This would be a test of how they could respond. The group records would certainly make them favourites based on the results so far today.

ACE & The Swagmen had a strange set of results. One of the best defences in the tournament and a fine 0-0 draw against tournament favourites FC Mahou but a couple of narrow defeats. Scoring goals had been their achilles' heel so far so if they could find their shooting boots whilst keeping tight defensively they could be a major threat in the Plate.

It was The Swagmen who opened the scoring as Dan Burkwood opened his account for the day. AFC Shooters 2 were quickly level thanks to Oscar Lisboa's second of the tournament. The Swagmen would gain the lead again with Dan Burkwood's second of the game. They were in the ascendency at half-time.

ACE & The Swagmen had the luxury of a two goal cushion when Joe Humphreys increased the lead to 3-1 but they couldn't relax yet. Marc Monserat reduced the lead to 3-2 before Joe Humphreys extended the lead to 4-2. This time there was no way back for AFC Shooters 2 as ACE & The Swagmen swept into the Plate Final.

Who would join ACE & The Swagmen in the Plate Final? The two teams set to do battle were Southgate County Brewers and Santa Maria.

Southgate County Brewer had experienced an up and down day so far with two good wins and two defeats. They had appeared in one Semi-Final before in our Veterans tournaments in the Cup competition at the 2017 Mallorca Veterans. A 2-1 win over Stilton Rovers earned them a place in the Cup Final that day. Would a second European Veterans final await them here?

Santa Maria had started and finished Group A with defeat but in between they had gone on a good run of 7 points from a possible 9. They needed to rediscover that form to set up a final on home soil (or home 3G as the case may be). It was in fact the Portuguese who scored the opening goal in this tie. Andre de Sousa was the man with the goal. Nuno Positeiro had kept two clean sheets for Santa Maria so far today and he would go on to complete a hat-trick of shut outs that would help lead his team to a 1-0 win and book their place in the final.

It meant Southgate County Brewers were out for today. We'd like to thank them for their efforts today. A number of their Veterans players had appeared for the Open Age teams earlier in the tournament due to an injury crisis so they had certainly put in a shift. We look forward to seeing them again soon.
