Our
17th ever Trophy Final now awaited us and we had
been treated to some superb Finals before. Today,
it was Skidmarks versus Moles Salah.
Many
of them had been very close with 6 of the previous
16 had going to penalties In Valencia 2012, Sporting
Abeergut held off a late rally from FC Dad to
win it 3-2. At the 2014 Budapest Fives, Contejus
Hurricanes (with a man sent off) held on to a
close 2-1 win over Cava Sundays.
They
had all been close affairs until 2014 when we
saw Ziar Crew beat Fireball 5-1 in Bratislava
and Elcombe Old Boys beat SV Zoo 5-0 in Barcelona.
These remain the highest scoring Trophy Finals.
Since then they have become closer affairs again.
We have had Trophy winners from England, Ireland,
Latvia, Oman, Slovakia and Spain. We knew we would
have another English name to add to the list from
this contest.
If
Skidmarks were to win they would be the third
team to have won Cup & Trophy titles in our
tournaments after Elcombe Old Boys (both Barcelona)
and Slovakia's GSF Drunkerz (who had the full
set of Cup, Plate & Trophy wins).
If
we were looking for a form guide we could look
no further back than to Game 12 of Group D of
this morning's competition when the teams met
head-to-head. On that occasion, Moles Salah won
2-0. Could they repeat the feat or could Skidmarks
exact their revenge?
Since
that group game, Skidmarks had lost their final
group game (1-0) but bounced back with two good
wins. 2-0 over Southgate Rascals and 1-0 over
Los Swallacticos. Luke Hatfield had found his
scoring touch and the defence had only conceded
1 in 3 games. For their part, Moles Salah finished
off the group with a 5-0 defeat to White Collar
Revolution but brushed that off by defeating the
current Barcelona Fives Plate champions 2-1 in
the last round.
The
stage was set and both teams were ready to go
– who would be picking up the winners medals in
the presentation?
