To start Round 5 we had Los Amblos versus The Warriors. This result was now academic in terms of the qualification places due to the various results in Round 4. There was still pride and honour to play for plus the chance to finish above their opponents in the table.

These two teams had been drawn in the same group for the fourth tournament in a row. At the 2017 Mallorca Veterans Tournament they met in their respective final fixtures of Group B – it was a closely fought game which saw Los Amblos (playing as Crabtree Amblers) win 1-0. Ade Chester was the man on target.

At the 2018 Algarve Veterans Tournament it finished all square at 1-1. Mike Petevinos put Los Amblos ahead before James Newton levelled thing up for The Warriors. At the 2019 Alicante Tournament it was another 1-0 win for Los Amblos thanks to a James Myers goal this time.

As you can see games between the two had been very close and it was to be the case again here in Lisbon. Los Amblos had the upper hand historically but it was The Warriors who took the advantage in the present with Mark Brooksby on target. Los Amblos were still in the game and they hit the post twice through Ade Chester and Pete Bowers. Those near misses would come back to haunt them as The Warriors sealed the game with a second goal from Mark Brooksby.

We thank both teams for supporting our tournaments again. After 3 years of waiting it was great to see everyone again. We look forward to seeing you at the next edition of the tournament – wherever that maybe!

Game 14 of Group A was AFC Shooters 2 versus Les 5 Salopards. This would be an intriguing contest as AFC Shooters 2 were unbeaten so far with 2 wins and 2 draws. They currently sat in second position on goal difference. A win or draw here would guarantee their place in the Cup. A loss would almost certainly see them miss out – rough justice for 1 bad result. If things went well here they could be Group A winners, if not they could be in the Plate.

From a Les 5 Salopards perspective things might look bleak following two successive defeats but if they could rediscover their form from their first two games they could book their place in the Cup with a win. A defeat would see them finish fourth whilst a draw would see them finish third at best. Only a win was good enough to reach the Cup.

It was the French team who struck first with a goal from Gani. It was not the end of the world for AFC Shooters 2 at this stage but they needed to hit back. Instead they found themselves two goals down when loan signing Luke Hatfield scored for his French foster team. AFC Shooters 2 had quite the second half on their hands. They needed to score at least twice to avoid the result of this game undoing all their good work so far today.

Gani's second of the game and third in two matches made it 3-0 to Les 5 Salopards and with that there was no way back for AFC Shooters 2. It was a fine win for Les 5 Salopards who booked their place in the Cup. AFC Shooters 2 would play Plate football in the knockout phase.

The 15th and final game of Group A was Santa Maria versus FC Dad. The two form teams in the group with both teams taking 7 points from the last 9 available. FC Dad remained unbeaten.

From an FC Dad perspective, they knew a draw would see them win Group A on goal difference or a win would see them take the group win by 2 clear points. A defeat would see Santa Maria leapfrog them and slip to third place and miss out on the Cup.

Santa Maria knew they had to win and if they could then they would be Group A winners. If they were to draw or lose they would finish fourth and go into the Plate.

If you were wondering if FC Dad might play for the draw those thoughts would have been dispelled early on when they took a first minute lead through Graham Dodds. It was an immediate psychological blow to Santa Maria who now knew they had to score at least twice.

The FC Dad defence was looking strong though and as we reached the final stages they maintained their 1-0 lead. There was to be a late goal though but it was FC Dad who doubled their lead. Graham Dodds scored in the last minute to book-end a fine performance. There was a third team clean sheet (and second for Rich Mason) as FC Dad booked their place in the Cup in style. Congratulations to our Group A winners.

Commiserations to Santa Maria but they would progress to the Plate and still have a shot at a trophy and medals.
