Les 5 Salopards (Fra)

Santa Maria were on an upward trajectory in terms of their form. Despite an opening defeat they had picked up a possible 4 points from the last 6 available including an impressive win over the then league leaders, Les 5 Salopards. They currently sat in fourth position but were only 2 points off the Cup qualification places.

Los Amblos came into this game with a draw and two narrow defeats (both by the odd goal) including one against the current league leaders. It showed they were competitive but not quite having the luck or cutting edge to turn performances into points. They needed a win here to keep hopes of qualification for the knockout phase alive.

This was one of the most entertaining games of the group phase as we witnessed a five goal thriller that ebbed and flowed. It was Santa Maria who opened the scoring through Joao Pereira but Greg Spiteri levelled things up for Los Amblos, 1-1 at the break.

Santa Maria forged ahead again through Diogo Silva but Los Amblos fought back again thanks to Ade Chester. Santa Maria then took the lead for a third time as Diogo Silva scored his second of the game and this time it was enough to secure all 3 points. Los Amblos did not have a third equalizer in them (in the allotted time) and it was another defeat by the odd goal. Santa Maria moved joint top of the table but the three teams around them all had a game in hand.

Game 11 of Group A was The Warriors versus AFC Shooters 2.

The win for Santa Maria in the previous game was a major spanner in the works for The Warriors. It meant they realistically had to win their last two games and hope for other results to go their way to qualify for the Plate. This was not an ideal fixture for The Warriors as they were up against the team at the top of the tree.

For AFC Shooters B, they could open up a three point lead at the top with a win here. At the top just 2 points now covered the top four positions and a win would really promote their claim for Cup qualification. Anything less and they would have work to do in their final fixture.

This game just showed how closely matched the teams across Group A were. It was first versus fifth but we had a very even game. Half-time came and went with the teams locked together at 0-0. The second half also came and went still with no score. There was a first clean sheet of the day for Gez Medinger (AFC Shooters B) and a second for Matt Elsey (The Warriors). Final score, 0-0.

In isolation, this was a good result for The Warriors. In the context of the group table it didn't help them too much.

Up next on was FC Dad versus Les 5 Salopards. This game would have a massive bearing on the Cup qualification places. Currently AFC Shooters 2 were top on 8 points with Santa Maria second on 7 points. There two teams were in third (Les 5 Salopards, 6 points) and fourth (FC Dad, 5 points). This was their game in hand on the teams above them.

Les 5 Salopards had opened up with two wins but slipped to defeat last time out. Could they bounce back? FC Dad were steady early doors with 2 draws but had just picked up their first win. A second win would see them go joint top of the table.

With three relatively tight and low-scoring games behind them, FC Dad released the handbrake in this one. It proved to be the highest scoring game of the entire tournament. For FC Dad there was a hat-trick for Calum Jones and a brace for Ben McNamee. At the other end there were goals for Yanick Jista and Gani.

The match ended 5-2 and not only had FC Dad joined AFC Shooters 2 on 8 points but they had boosted their goal difference to such an extent that they were now top of the table. Les 5 Salopards now found themselves down in fourth position.
