So, onto Round 5 we go and the last attempts for the teams to stake their claim for the Cup qualification or for Plate qualification depending on their situation. First up was ASMS against Wessex FC.

ASMS were still unbeaten but despite this they were down in fourth place as too many draws had slowed their progress. They had to win this game to climb above Wessex FC and then await the result from PMPCAR v Tinniedad & Tobacco to see if they had enough (it could come down to goal difference). A defeat could see them even slip down into the Trophy if Naranjitos won their final fixture and it would come down to goal difference again.

Wessex FC were in a slightly better position – 1 point better off, 2 places better off and a better goal difference. A win would guarantee a Cup place, a draw would also be enough for second place. The only thing they didn't want was a loss.

The two teams were level at the break 0-0 so it would all come down to the second half. Wessex FC were the form team in the group with 6 points and 10 goals scored from their previous 2 games. They went ahead late on through Isaac Thompson which prompted a flurry of late goals. Noureddine Zahir must have thought he'd earned his team with an equalizer with just 1 minute to go. However, a late strike from Anthony Scarlett ensured it was another 3 points for Wessex FC.

Wessex FC would qualify for the Cup, ASMS would qualify for this afternoon's Trophy competition.

PMPCAR versus Tinniedad & Tobacco was arguably the “biggie” of the final round of fixtures. PMPCAR had lead Group A from Round 1 through to Round 4. They needed a draw to guarantee qualification to the Cup. A win would see them crowned Group A champions. Defeat? Well they'd drop down to third and go into the Plate.

Tinniedad & Tobacco simply had to win to preserve their 100% record of qualifying for the Cup in every eurofootballfives.com tournament they had played in to date. On the face of it (i.e. having to win against the team at the top of the group), this was arguably their hardest task to qualify since their 2014 debut.

It was first blood to Tinniedad & Tobacco as Michael Wilkes kept up his fine touch in front of goal as he scored for the fourth game running. He was to repeat the feat in the second half to double the advantage. This, combined with a clean sheet, ensured Tinniedad & Tobacco would go through in second place – behind Wessex FC on goal difference.

PMPCAR would have to make do with the Plate.

The 15th and final game of Group A was Giggs Boson FC versus Naranjitos. The former sat in 6th place and although they could move level with their opponents on 3 points the goal difference meant they were likely to remain in 6th. Giggs Boson needed a 6 goal win to climb above their opponents. Any form of win would be a good morale boost to go into the Trophy competition with.

Naranjitos knew exactly what they needed to do – win by 2 goals. They would then move above ASMS and into the Plate qualification places. A draw or defeat would see them miss out. A 1 goal win could work as long as it was 5-4 (or higher). 4-3 would cause us issues as it would mean ASMS and Naranjitos would both finish on 6 points with goal difference of 5-5. The head to head result was a draw so we would need penalties to see who would qualify for the Plate and who would qualify for the Trophy.

These two teams had met before at the 2016 Barcelona Fives. Back in Barcelona Giggs Boson FC had enjoyed a successful start with 2 opening wins before Naranjitos ended that run, 3-1. In 2016 it was the Spanish who lead through David Moya Aparicio before Sam Lock levelled at 1-1. Two goals from Javier Sanchez Flores then sealed it for Naranjitos.

Half-time in this one was 0-0 and time was ticking away for Naranjitos. As he did in Barcelona 2 years ago, David Moya Aparicio gave Naranjitos the lead mid-way through the second half. It still wasn't enough for the Spanish team but in the dying embers of the game David Moya Aparicio scored again. A vital second goal for his team that lifted his team into 4 th and they would play Plate football this afternoon.

Giggs Boson FC would be joined by ASMS in the Trophy. It has to be said, it was a high quality line up in Group A today.
