The second final of the day would see FK Aliance versus Paralytic Athletic. With seven games of football already under their belt the two teams would need to summon one last burst of energy to ensure they would be picking up winners and not runners-up medals in the presentation.

Let us have a look at the two teams' records today:

FK Aliance

Played 7, Won 2, Drawn 3, Lost 2

Goal difference: +2 (10-8)

Top Scorer: Kristaps Tavlavicius (3)

Form: 3 games unbeaten (1 win, 2 draws)

Previous finals: 2016 Riga Tournament Trophy Winners

Paralytic Athletic

Played 7, Won 2, Drawn 3, Lost 2

Goal difference: 0 (6-6)

Top Scorer: Jack Veness (2)

Form: 2 games unbeaten (1 win, 1 draw)

Previous finals: n/a

A look at the stats suggested there was going to be very little in this. The results had been identical. FK Aliance had the edge on goal difference largely due to a big win at the end of the group phase. FK Aliance had picked up a winners trophy and medals before so maybe that experience would hold them in good stead. Paralytic Athletic had previously been used to playing in the Cup competition so this step into the Plate may see them as favourites especially given the strength of opposition they have gone toe-to-toe with in the past. It was an intriguing contest that awaited us.

There was nothing to separate these two teams on the field of play as we arrived at half-time locked together at 0-0. The second half came and went with the two teams still level at 0-0. A penalty shoot-out would decide this one. Perhaps we should not be surprised as FK Aliance had won both their knock-out games on pens. Paralytic Atheltic had also been involved in a shoot out today.

When we look back over history we see that FK Aliance won the 2016 Riga Tournament Trophy on penalties. In fact, they had played 3 and won all 3 in our tournaments.

Paralytic Athletic's shoot-out history wasn't as strong. Including today's Quarter Final they had won 2 and lost 3 shoot-outs.

Our assertion that Jackson's Five might be hard to beat looked a little wide of the mark. Maybe it was just the one game too far for Jackson's Five today as CTMB Pumas really put them to the sword in the second half.

Aliance would take the first penalty with Kristaps Tavlavicus converting. Jack Veness was first up for Paralytic Athletic who powered it past Graham Williams in goal, 1-1. Edgar Polkovs was up next for FK Aliance. He scored the winning penalty in the 2016 Riga Tournament Trophy Final and duly obliged by scoring his spot kick here. It meant, FK Aliance had now taken 10 penalties in eurofootballfives.com shoot-outs and scored all 10.

Up next was Paralytic Athletic's #10 who made it 2-2 with a successful kick to the bottom left hand corner. Graham Williams close to it but not close enough. The next penalty was FK Aliance #23 (Janis Kleperis) against Paralytic #23 (Joe Walker). Joe Walker stood tall and blocked the penalty. Disaster for FK Aliance. It meant Alex Wood had a chance to win the Plate Final for his team. He went powerful down the middle and Graham Williams got a hand to it but he couldn't keep it out, it ricocheted off Williams and into the top corner. Parayltic Athletic had done it and ironically on penalties which had been their Achilles heel in recent years.

Our condolences to FK Aliance. They had battled hard all day and just missed out on collecting the trophy in the presentation. A Plate would have looked nice alongside the Trophy from three years ago. It was not to be though.

We offer huge congratulations to our 2019 Barcelona Fives Plate winners – Paralytic Athletic! The first of many perhaps.
