As the 2019 Barcelona Fives Cup Quarter-Finals were about to get underway we were down to the elite 8 teams in the tournament. We had five nationalities in with a chance of glory – Denmark, England, Greece, Hungary and Spain (x3) were all gunning for tournament success.

We started on Pitch A with FC Miracle versus Northern Town. FC Miracle had a superb record in these tournaments. This was their 8th tournament with us and they had now qualified for the Cup on all 8 occasions. I n their previous 7, FC Miracle had won once, finished 2 nd three times, gone out to French teams in Cup Semi-Finals twice and also had 1 Cup Quarter-Final. This was their third Barcelona Fives appearance and their record in Catalonia read Runners-Up in 2011 and Quarter-Final in 2014.

Northern Town were less experienced in their eurofootballfives.com careers with this being their second tournament. They qualified for the Cup Quarter-Finals in Gdansk just over 12 months and had reached the same stage again. They were 2-1 winners over FC Foreigntina (Pol) on their way to the title.

We didn't like to call a winner in this game when we saw the fixture come up and whilst we thought the game could be won by either side we were a little surprised by the margin of victory. Northern Town completed safe passage to the semi-finals with a 3-0 win. Cameron M'Crystal was their top scorer on the day – he opened and finished the scoring with a goal for Darryn Crawford in between.

It was farewell to FC Miracle for 2019 although it looks like we may see them in Amsterdam in 2020 for a crack at a second title.

Up next on Pitch B was Patagonia versus Danish Dynamites which promised to be an intriguing game.

Patagonia had finished the group phase strongly. They produced 3 successive wins including one over the then group leaders, Black Sheep, to take the Group C title. They were up against a Danish Dynamites team whose form had waned a little. They had a strong start with a 9-0 win and had picked up 7 points from a possible 9. They finished the group with 1 point from a possible 6 and so hopefully the break had given them a chance to recharge their batteries as they had a squad of just 5 so no chance to rest aching limbs/lungs.

2 years ago the Danish team defeated Fiorentina Turner at this stage to set up a Semi-Final with L'Albiceleste of France. The first half here ended goal-less but after the break they were heading in the right direction thanks to a Jens Bodker Knudsen strike.

Patagonia hit back through Milo Huelpa and Matias as they turned the game on its head. Just when you thought the tide had turned against the Dynamites then they were back in it. Jesper Frisch with a great strike to level it up at 2-2. There was still time for Patagonia to break Danish hearts though – Santiago Larght with the fifth and deciding goal of the game.

We had to say farewell to Danish Dynamites who continued their good work at these tournaments but yet to find that first title.

Quarter-Final three saw an epic contest between Sintetrimeni and Club Esportiu Llefia.

Sintetrimeni were ranked second statistically at the end of the group phase and they were up against the 2015 champions. Since winning in 2015 Club Esportiu Llefia had been unable to replicate that success. 2016 saw them miss out on Cup qualification but they won the Cup. An injury ravaged 2017 squad saw them miss out on the knockout phase altogether. 2018 saw a return to form and they were back in the elite Cup competition. They reached the semi-finals before losing 3-0 to Lithuania's LT United. They were aiming to reach a third Cup semi-final in 5 years.

There was nothing to separate these two teams on the field of play as we arrived at half-time locked together at 0-0. The second half came and went with the two teams still level at 0-0. A penalty shoot-out would decide this one.

Club Esportiu Llefia took the first penalty and saw it saved by Georgious Siaterlis and it was instant advantage to Sintetrimeni. Perikilis Karvounis took full advantage as he made it 1-0 to the Greek team.

Sergio Rodriguez Viejo then kept his team in it by equalising for 1-1. Panagiotis Karachanidis sent Ramon Betat the wrong way to put Sintetrimeni back in front. The pressure was all on Alfred Jimenez de Andreu (tournament top scorer in 2015 & 2016). He was on target to make it 2-2. Andreas Aggelopoulos stepped forward with a chance to win it – he struck it under the advancing Ramon Batet and Sintetrimeni were through.

We had to say farewell to Club Esportiu Llefia and we would like to thank them for supporting the tournament. We hope to see them for a sixth successive tournament next year.

The final Quarter-Final was Agger Diouf Diouf versus Black Sheep. If we were to rank the 8 teams in the Cup competition based upon their points tally and separating those on equal points by goal difference the teams would rank like this:

  1. Agger Diouf Diouf Diouf
  2. Sintetrimeni
  3. Patagonia
  4. Northern Town
  5. FC Miracle
  6. Black Sheep
  7. Club Esportiu Llefia
  8. Danish Dynamites

The teams ranked 2, 3 & 4 had already progressed. Could the number 1 ranked team join them? Agger Diouf Diouf Diouf had been incredible today. The only team to record a 100% record in the group phase, joint top scorers, joint best defence and therefore unsurprisingly best goal difference. They were favourites to go through.

Black Sheep had not read the script though. They made the initial breakthrough which is often crucial – Sam Margetts with the goal. He added a second before half-time as the local team were in control. In the second half Josh Southall made it 3-0 and Agger Diouf Diouf Diouf, in the blink of an eye, had gone.

It was a real shame after such a good performance in the group phase. They had certainly raised the bar on future expectations. A tournament win next time out?
