The Blackouts (Ire)

The 2019 Veterans Tournament Plate Final would be contested by CT1 and The Blackouts. This was our sixth Veterans Plate competition for our June event. The roll of honour so far read:

2015, Algarve: Norton Old Boys (def. The Warriors, 1-0)

2016, Lisbon: Pioes (def. Crabtree Amblers, 2-0).

2017, Mallorca: The Warriors (def. Dickie Dogs, 2-0)

2018, Algarve: Water Boy (def. Dickie Dogs, 2-0)

We had 3x English and 2x Portuguese winners to date. There would soon be a Spanish or an Irish name added to that list.

On today's form there was very little to differentiate the two teams and it is often difficult to compare the stats as one group may well have been tougher than the other. The Blackouts had more wins, CT1 had more draws maybe this extra cutting edge would lead to The Blackouts edging it. CT1 had drawn three games in a row – a fourth would see a penalty shoot-out decide the Plate in our June Veterans tournament for the first time.

With the game underway there was very little to choose between the team two teams. We were goal-less for much of the first period. Just before half-time we would see the deadlock broken. The ball broke for Chris Holland on the left-side of the box and his cool left footed finish passed into the back of the net put The Blackouts 1-0 up at the break.

The Blackouts had won 3 of their 5 games 1-0 today and were well-placed to make this 4 out of 6. Goalkeeper Noel Holland had kept 11 clean sheets in 18 eurofootballfives.com games before this match so they knew they had the tools to see this game through – which is exactly what they did. Final score, 1-0 to The Blackouts.

For CT1 it was disappointment to fall just short. For now they had to be content with Runners-Up medals but maybe it will be winners medals and trophies waiting for them next time.

Today though we celebrate The Blackouts. After two runners-up finishes they had winner medals in the presentation today. Huge congratulations to The Blackouts! Enjoy your victory, enjoy your celebrations and enjoy the rest of your tour weekend in Alicante!
