A warm welcome to Alicante (and it was warm!). A city by the beach – think Lisbon, think Barcelona, think Valencia. Three destinations that have proved extremely popular as locations for our tournaments Now, you can add Alicante to that list as it became our 16 th tournament destination in Europe. What a setting and what a day we had in store with 29-teams signed up in the Open Age (18) and Veterans (11) categories.

We kicked off with two regular teams experienced in eurofootballfives.com competition. We will preview them in more detail as we progress with this report but between them they had reached 4 eurofootballfives.com Cup Finals between them including 1 each last season.

It was Galacticos versus 9 Nana Budds and a high quality encounter to kick us off in Group A. At the end of the first half it was honours even as Mo Hafesji's opener for Galacticos was cancelled out by Will Crowther for 9 Nana Budds.

In the second half Will Crowther doubled his personal and his team's tally to put 9 Nana Budds ahead. The fourth goal of the game was decisive as it opened up a two goal cushion for 9 Nana Budds. John Mastel was the scorer and 9 Nana Budds walked off with all 3 points.

Game 2 of Group A was L'Albiceleste (Fra) versus Brewin Dolphin A (Eng).

L'Albiceleste (Fra) arrive in Alicante as the most successful team in the Open Age draw with 3 titles to their name. Under the name of Grant Thornton they won the 2013 Mallorca Fives and as L'Albiceleste they won the 2016 Riga Tournament and 2017 Barcelona Fives.

Their most recent performance was at the 2018 Algarve Open where they looked on course to win a fourth title. 7 wins out of 7 in Group A made them favourites as we entered the knock-out phase. A 3-0 win over a strong FC Gymnasium (Por) only enhanced that reputation. A surprise 1-0 defeat to a spirited Cruz Del Sur in the Semi-Finals prevented them collecting another trophy.

This was a tough start on paper for Brewin Dolphin A but they kept it tight in the first half. A solitary goal by Thibault Kerouredan was what separated the two teams. After the break the French team showed their class with goals from Cyrille Segalini, Cedric Castarede and Antoine Loscul all contributing to a 4-0 victory.

The final two teams in Group A were AC Motxo International of Spain and Lostwithiel FC of England. Both of these teams made their debut in our tournaments last year with AC Motxo making the journey to the Algarve whilst Lostwithiel travelled to Amsterdam.

AC Motxo had a successful tour last year as they won the Plate at the 2018 Algarve Open. In the group phase of the tournament they produced 1 win and 3 draws from their campaign as they qualified for the Plate competition. In the Plate competition they found their form with a 2-0 Quarter-Final win over Real de Groot (Hol) and a win on penalties in the Semi-Final against Elbersiktas (Hol). In the Plate Final they beat Pique Blinders 1-0 to spark wild celebrations.

The Spanish team were on a run of 4 games unbeaten but they fell behind in this one to two first half goals from Jordan Cummings. Ruben Torres Mejias gave AC Motxo hope before the break to reduce the score to 2-1 at half-time.

In the second half Lostwithiel FC secured a fine opening win thanks to a Tyler Cummings goal. Final score, 3-1.
